Where to find the Flange # on a fuel pump?

I have to replace my fuel pump...and every supplier tells you they need the flange number on the pump...does anyone know where that is normally stamped or have a picture of one? I have a mercruiser 4 cyl 165 with a carter pump. Also the pump has a straight lever to actuate it...the replacement shows a slightly bent lever?

Thanks in advance...

I am surprised that no one has had this problem? Plenty have read the posting...but no replies. If I ever find out this info...I will post it!

Re: Where to find the Flange # on a fuel pump?

Hi there, sorry for any delays you may be experiencing at the moment here on iboats! Ultimately it would be due to the fact that one of the strongest main supporters of iboats that knew just about everything there was to know about most of the Mercruiser and Volvo Penta and a few other engine models has unfortunately just recently passed away. His quick thinking posting skills where astronomical to harder type questions such as this. I know if he (Don S) was still here with us, you would have had an input of how to go about you're question already.

This forum is very busy and gets a lot of forum lurkers every day but not all of them may not have had the experience yet to be able to help you out in short order while Don was capable of putting out 30-40 or more post a day. That is a lot of boats to work on in one day.:)

With that said, I went back through some of your old post and seen that you have a 1987' Wellcraft 165 Alpha 1. To confirm that, would you happen to have your engine serial number handy? If not, I believe I found your parts catalog, here is a link to it in case you are in need of it,

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectSerailRange.asp?doc_nbr=165+(2+BBL.)++MERCURY+224+I/L4++1987

And here is the section for your fuel pump, See item number 19,

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...&bdesc=CARBURETOR+AND+FUEL+PUMP(165-170-3.7L)

Now i'll be honest, it's been years for me personally to see/work on an engine such as yours, so I don't recall the flange number being needed but that don't mean they don't need it either.

But just looking up your engine info, I see you would need Mercruiser part number 8M0073435 that has superceded from 861676A 1. And at the moment I don't see any of the two website asking for a flange number.

C&M Marine Distributing - Fuel Pump 8M0073435 - (Powered by CubeCart)

Maybe the OEM mercruiser service manual will have some info about the number as sometimes they do.

Hope this helps, Good luck with it.:)

Nothing in the manual about a flange number either. Just the part number as per the Merc parts catalog (-42725A3 superseding to 8M0073435). The only information I can get from the manual is that it's a Carter pump.

Eek... My last sierra mech fuel pump was a disaster! (made in china....failed after 7.5 engine hours). Hopefully the v-6 version shown in the link is a better bet.

Here is what I could find out about the carter fuel pump,
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/84/84_04.pdf

Also,
Fuel Pump for Mercruiser 4 Cylinder 2.5L, 3.0L, 3.7L
Carter style mechanical fuel pump for Mercruiser inline 4 cylinder 2.5 liter 120 hp, 3.0 liter 140 hp and 3.7 liter 165-190 hp engines.

Meets OEM and U.S.C.G. Specifications
Designed Specifically for Marine Use
New Mounting Gasket Included
2 Year Manufacturer's Warranty

Replaces OEM Part Numbers: Mercruiser 861676A1

Marine Fuel Pump Identification:
Many fuel pumps are often used for multiple applications. Sometimes the model or engine displacement of a engine can be difficult to determine. If the original pump is available it can easily be identified two ways.

1. Look for the flange I.D. number (the number stamped on the mounting flange or a tag attached to a screw).

2. Checking the clock positions of your inlet, outlet and separator fittings (if applicable). To properly identify these positions hold the pump with the rocker arm facing away from you in the 12 o'clock position. Next looking at the bottom of the pump the inlet and outlet should be marked. Note the clock positions of the inlet and outlet (see above diagram for clock position).

Flange I.D. Number: 60337
Clock Positions:
Inlet is at the 8 o'clock position
Outlet is at the 3 o'clock position
Separator is at the 8 o'clock position

Please Note: Mercruiser used two different fuel pumps on the (2.5L 120hp) and the (3.0L 140hp) from 1983-1989, the 3.7L 488 model used two different fuel pumps in 1983-1984. If your filter bowl faces down this is the correct fuel pump for your application.

Re: Where to find the Flange # on a fuel pump?

I stripped the old Carter fuel pump of all paint...did not find any flange numbers like those listed...so I ordered a Carter type replacement pump...installed and this old 165 starts without throttle advancing, spraying started fluid or any frustrations. It is running after about 1/3 a revolution of the crank pulley! Cold engine that starts that easy...is not a dream! Thanks to all of you...my lousy running boat is now a great running boat. What tipped me off was when I installed a clear plastic line from the top bowl of the pump to the carb...and saw the brown crud coming out of the pump. After removing it...I opened it up...full of rusty looking junk. Will put in the water soon for a run out to test it...but just the way it starts is VERY ENCOURAGING,
