Where to get Johnson tooling?

I'm going to attempt to repair my lower unit gearing since my forward no longer works (when I have my lower unit on a work bench and manually pull up the shift rod while turning the prop, forward will not engage, but I can hear it trying to engage). I have an OMC Johnson manual and am reading the disassembly procedure and it calls for a number of special tools. Does anyone know of any substitutes or does someone know of a place that will loan such tools?

You'll need some way to grip the splines at the top of the driveshaft (without damaging them). I'm lucky and have a water-jet at work I can use, I made a spline wrench on that. For the pinion nut I was able to get at it with an open-end wrench that I took a bit of "meat" off of with a bench grinder. I can't remember what year your engine is, on some of the older ones you need some BIG ratcheting snap ring pliers. Instead of paying big bucks for a tool I'd only use twice I took the lower unit to my local marine dealer and paid $10 to have them pull the snap rings for me. I think the manual calls for a special puller for the prop shaft bearing housing, I was able to use a standard puller with the only modification being the fabrication of some longer arms to increase it's reach - the housing slid out very easily.
