Where to measure transom shift cable dimension from?

OMC manual describes adjustment of the transom cable very clearly, my only problem is where to take the 7-5/8" or 7-9/16" measurement from.

The manual says from the end of the cable crimp, and the picture shows the end nearest the linkage - that's fine, but my cable has a nut attached at that end of the crimp, which is around 1/8" thick. Do I measure from the short or long side of it?

And a somewhat related question -- when removing/installing the shift cable at the pivot housing -- as you back the nut out it really puts some torque on the cable housing. Can that cause a problem? Should that nut be spinning freely from the housing?

What I ended up doing was freeing the pivot hsg first, and actually rotating it several times to avoid torquing the cable housing.

See post linked below. My take is that it's gotta be from the end of the metal crimp on the cable housing, not the end of the retaining nut. I'm not an expert, but none of the experts disagreed when I stated that in the other thread.

Good luck, let us know how it comes out.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=015497#000024

ps- as to second question, I don't remember any spinning nuts when I replaced my transom shift cable. Is it really cranking down on the cable housing to the point where it is binding the cable inside?? (Remember, I'm no expert)
