Where to put generator?

I have a 1989 bayliner trophy 2159 with a roof cooling/heating unit. I need at least a 3k watt generator which is kind of bulky. Does anybody have a generator of this size on their boat? Right now I have to deal with putting generator in the boat and moving it to a platform on my swimdeck when I anchor. It is a major PITA. I'm considering just not taking it anymore, but it gets pretty hot in the cabin on summer nights in oklahoma. Any suggestions?

On a 2159, there is no place for a big marine generator. There also isn't room for enough batteries to use an inverter. nor do you have enough alternator to keep them charged.

+1 on this...

That isn't an RV... The AC is for shore power only, trying to shoehorn a large enough power system to power it is dangerous at best. You aren't going to find an inverter that will power that, and if you do the batteries needed to run it are going to be MASSIVE. As Don alluded to, you can get proper marine generators, but one big enough to power an AC that sucks 3000 watts is certainly not a small unit.

Sounds like you are ready for your next boat. Based on what you said, your boating style demands a 24' (or better, 26-28) cruiser.

Don't know how long you have had your current boat, but everyone learns with their first boat how they want to use a boat. You now know enough to make a list of things you need in your next boat.

Good luck...

I just got this boat last summer. Its a good boat for me. I think I will just suck it up and deal with the heat. After all I can always jump in the water. I have already sold my generator, and I'm thinking about selling the roof unit since its just extra weight. Just didnt know if there was a smaller generator I could use.

if you are gonna use a genny on a boat it should be a watercooled marine unit...... those are expensive..... you CAN hang an aircooled unit off of the stern on the swim platform but that is risky for the unit.... You can set them on the shore when beached but that isn't easy to do.

That's not a huge cabin, Does it really need something that consumes 3000 watts to keep it cool? If you could find something more efficent, those little 1K or 2K watt honda inverter generators are easy to move around and pretty quiet.

Of course its your decision , but it sounds like you are just going to settle for what a 21' boat can provide. But it doesn't sound like that is the way you want yo boat.

It doesn't matter whether you've had the boat for a year or 20, you should get the boat you want and do the kind of boating you want, if you can afford it.

I had my first boat (brand new wellcraft 23 w/a) for only a year and a half. In that time, I learned tons about boating, and especially about how I wanted to boat. Then I bought the boat I wanted and loved it for many years.

Good luck with whatever you decide...
