I am currently shopping for a used outboard. Something 1990 or newer and 40-90HP

Craigslist is hard to search for outboards, as it doesn't have just an outboard section, and using an key word I can think of brings up the boat ad's, since moat boat ads include those words (outboard, 40hp, engine, mercury, ect.)

Ebay is full of outboard parts in the so called "complete outboard engines" section

seems that iboats, only has new motors or select pre owned.

And Boat trader has mostly newer engines

Any other resources out there?
My location is Kansas City, MO

When searching CL, select "titles only" and use Mercury, Evinrude, etc, for the keyword. The results will be reduced to a more manageable number. You will need to do several searches for the major brands.

Do you have any boat grave-yards around where you live? I see such places around where I live and there has to be some type engines there. But I also suspect that they will need some work to get them running again from the driving-pass cursory looks.... But search your surrounding areas for boat salvage yards and see what's available. Most any engine you'd buy would still need some work if only for new water impellor and plugs and such anyways. Just an idea!

Outboards are sometimes easier to find and less expensive when they come with a junk boat.

I will often search project or tlc.

If you look two days in a row you can also check the box to look at ads posted today only.

If you buy a project. Test the motor before removal, salvage everything off the boat, scrap the boat and sell the trailer and any salvage you don't need.

I just picked up an '81 70hp Johnson, and when all is taken care of it will be a free motor and I'll have some cash in hand.

Avoid eBay unless you can inspect and test it before committing any cash. Most of the "complete, should run" motors there are the ones that didn't sell on craigslist.

Maybe you could try placing an ad on cl stating the size motor you want. Then you can sit back and wait for the offers to come pouring in. Of course you will probably get bombarded with a bunch of junk as well. Just a thought.

There are a number of dealers on the net who will sell you a fully tested and checked out motor. They will ship it to you anywhere in the U.S. . The shipping cost will depend on how far away you are from them. I had one shipped from Wisconsin to Texas for $300 on a factory pallet. It was a 30hp and weighed 155lbs. There is a big dealer in Grand Rapids,MI that has been in business for many years and usually has a good number of used motors for sale who is not to far from you. Most of their motors are probably from Michigan where the boating season is short yet there are many boaters in the state which I would think would help in finding a good one with low hrs on it.

Would you mind sharing the name of the dealer in Grand rapids?

The craigslist search tip has helped some, but there doesn't seem to be any good motors for sale in my area.

I would prefer to stay newer than 1990, so most project boats are out of the question.

You could google Grand Rapids MI outboard motors. See what pops up.
