I have a simple question for you all. I have an old OMC with a 3.8litre GM, Buick, whatever it may be. Anyway, I purchased it recently and the hot light came on when I took it out! So, I pulled it out of the water and started an examination of the cooling system. When I opened up the thermostat housing, I found no thermostat!! Could this be the cause of my overheating???

Any info greatly appreciated!

People usually take them out trying to solve overheating problems, start from scratch with your diagnosis - pump, thermostat, clean system etc. What you check depends on RWC or FWC.

Re: Where's my thermostat???

RWC is raw water cooled - the water that the boat is floating in runs through the engine to cool it, not a good system especially if you use the boat in salt water (salt very bad).
FWC is fresh water cooled or antifreeze/boil cooled, the engine has a heat exchanger fitted (boat equivilent of a radiator) the outside water cools the heat exchanger, no salt water goes through the motor - much better system.

The thermostat isn't sitting there like a car. Look up inside housing it might be there. It is held in by a o-ring. buy a manual. Check impeller. And donthrowgirls

Correct, it's up inside of the (massive!) thermostat housing.

It's RWC. Fortunately, I don't use it or plan to use it in salt water. Fresh water machine.

To tylerin:

I appreciate the kind and helpful advice.
1. I have a manual and have been checking through it. It's explanations are not always the greatest. Perhaps you should purchase and/or read one and you will know first hand what I'm talking about.
2. If you read my first message you will see that I opened up the thermostat housing already. That is how I know there is no thermostat in there.
3. The sterndrive impeller is in good condition, already checked it.
4. I will continue to throw girls.

Thank you.

Re: Where's my thermostat???

Obviously I offended you. It wasn't intentional. Many people don't see the thermostat hiding up inside housing, thought I could help. Seeing that impeller is most probable cause for overheating I thought I might suggest checking, and Everyone needs a manual. As for the donthrowgirls, I hope your kidding!!

Tylerin:

I apologize, but I thought you were attacking my intellect as I've seen so many bozo's do on this type of forum. In my mind this type of forums are a great resource for those of us (myself included) who are new to the world of boating, frustrated with their boat or have simply no idea what to do next! I simply (and I'm sure most would agree) like this type of site because it is very helpful. If I ever have any info to give, I will be willing to do so.

Thanks for your input. Sorry for taking it the wrong way.

ithrowgirls

p.s. Cheerleading is how I came up with my name.
