I have just been trying to start my 82 merc 90 L6, being new to this motor I am unsure of where the inlets are for water. my I/O has an actual hose connection.
I think it must be those fin looking holes on eithor side of the lower. but. If this is the place, and I put the muffs over them water should come out the "pee hole" when at idle? or at least out of the prop hub or somewhere right??
Not too worried about the impellor due to it needing to me changed anyhow, just want to kick it over.

hey there junior, i have same motor although mine is the 115 IL6...1977 vintage.

anywho... yes, those fin like holes just a few inches above the prop, put the muffs on those...

you should be, if it isnt pumping water, your motor will get hot, quick, that is a big motor and needs a lot of liquid to cool the beast. water should come out the starboard side, just under the lower cowl hood, and also with the exhaust

mikey

so I have water coming from nowhere...maby a tricle from the hub but thats it.
This motor has not been ran for about 5 or 6 years so the impeller probably self distructed on ignition. If this is the case will water come from anywhere or nowhere at all?
I will be putting a new pump in. I am just wondering if no water at all is right or if I should be looking for blockage. I found those mud dauber wasp nest things in several places under the cowl.
Also i can see light coming through the "pee hole" and no hose or anything of the sort. What should there be?

Blow it out with LP air. I hooked my compressor to the tell/tale outlet and gave it several good shots of air to make sure it was not clogged up. I also have a pressure gauge, so i blew air through the hose that runs from gauge to motor. Just disconnected hose from back of gauge.

when you say gauge you mean a water pressure? if so I dont have one. the tell tale.. I can look down the rear of my cowl and see light coming through the hole, but I dont see any hose. there should be one right
my seloc manual gives no diagram for the circulation of water :(

so I am an idiot. I was looking at a cowl drain I think, now I see the tell tale over to the side a little.

yes, mine is on the starboard (right) side of the motor toward the rear. I just held the end of my air hose as best as i could to the tell/tale and gave it a few shots of air.

yes, i mean water pressure gauge in my previous reply.

cool I will try to blow it out. After properly locating the tell tale I did discover dried mud in there.
do you have a temp guage? I would like to have one of those rather than a water pressure guage

no, I do not have a temp gauge. wish i did, think they would be a good tool to have. I am not even sure where the sender would attach on the motor. My SELOC manual does not go very in depth on that subject either. rest of the gauges i have a broken. guy i bought my boat from did not care about them, as long as it ran to get him to a fishin hole, that's all that mattered. I am slowly replacing them all as I get time.

you could try running something small up in to the tell/tale to clean out the mud or whatever it is blocking it up. hopefullt it is not very far in there.
