Hey Jay,
What happened with the Chrysler you got??
Is it a runner or a paperweight?
Just curious as I noticed another member got himself a chrysler.

Re: Where's the chrysler?

Sorry - just saw this. See my answer to your PM.

The short answer is that it isn't running yet but will soon, I think. Once that happens, I will have to study the motor extensively and become the guru of 1974 Chrysler 10hp motors. Please don't ask me anything about any other model because I will be dumber than a stone on the subject! :D

From what I have seen of the motor thus far, they are very simple mechanically and, other than a few quirks here and there, aren't much different than the small OMC motors. Frank, over at the Chrysler page, has been a big help and has already prevented me from doing a couple of dumb things to it.

The prop is a little dinged up but I think I can get the prop shop to re-hub it (not sure it needs it but might) and dress up the blades.

My only regret is that it isn't one of the goofy looking models with the generator that goes on top of the flywheel. If I end up using it as a kicker, it would have been cool to set up a secondary electrical system in the boat that I could switch to, to run lights and stuff if the charging system in my main powerplant failed. Then again, I have two of the largest Wally World marine batteries that you can get in my 17.5 foot boat! Aw heck, I just want something else to fool with!

Re: Where's the chrysler?

1976 105hp sitting on the rack waiting for a hull to make an appearance. Got it free after it sat for who knows how long, put some fuel to it and it lit right off. Noisy when idling but thats the nature of those beasts (big and heavy on the inside).

I worked at a dealer during those years and one thing was that the 105 and 75hp units were the only motors we would sell with a warranty to the commercial industry. Want a Merc or JohnRude and your on your own.

Re: Where's the chrysler?

Update:

I purchased a service manual and a parts manual on EBay and both have now arrived. I also have the rebuild kits for the carb and fuel pump, as well as a new water pump impeller. Hopefully, the transom bracket that I won on EBay will arrive soon too. I think that is the first part that I am going to install because it will make doing the rest a lot easier - right now the motor isn't all that stable on the motor stand because there is only one transom bracket to hold it in place.

Re: Where's the chrysler?

Well, now I went and "done it." I guess I really need to get the Chrysler finished 'cause ... well ... I went and bought another 1972 Johnson 65hp motor! I think I need to go to old outboard motor rehab - I just can't stop buying them! It was only $150, I swear! JBJ, you and Samo have to come too because you two are as bad with the old motors as I am ... I think its a premix addiction! :D

The transom bracket for the Chrysler arrived today so I guess I'll start tinkering in the evenings as of tonight.

BTW, is there any law against putting a Chrysler on the same transom with your OMC? Just makin sure .... don't want to tick off the outboard motor gods!

Re: Where's the chrysler?

Ha Ha, I don't know if I would want a chrysler WITHOUT an OMC on the same transom!!!! Just kidding. I'm not an old outboard addict. I can quit anytime I'm telling you. I'm not like those other guys (Steve for example) that have 30 or 40 outboards----unless I get filthy rich. ;)
Hurry up and post a couple of pics of that chrysler. I'm dying to see hear how it runs and how it compares in quality to an OMC when you actually take it apart.
Later,

Re: Where's the chrysler?

I started pulling the motor apart tonight. The transom clamp assembly that I bought on EBay is broken where the tilt-lock flange screws in, so I'm gong to have to use my center tube assembly, with the clamp assemblies from the other one. That will make for a bit more work but things should end up OK in the end.

The lower unit comes off of the motor very easily. I like the shift rod connector better than OMC's - its just a hex-head screw that goes through one piece and screws into the other. Very simple setup that is easy to break apart. It looks like the water pump impeller was replaced just before this motor went into a closet but the pump housing is badly pitted, so I will have to replace it. I opted to just put the water pump back together with the old impeller for the time being. I think it will pump water and I want to make sure that there aren't any major problems with the motor before spending a bunch of $ on it.

Thus far, I don't see anything about this motor that is all that different from a small OMC of the same era. Both are pretty simple to work on and each seems to have certain things that I like better (and worse) than the other.

I'll keep you posted on the progress.
