hey guys, I ran a bunch of seafoam, and deep creep through my engine, and it is now idling at 2000rpm, before it was at 1200rpm, Iam assuming that it cleaned a bunch of crap out when I did it and now its idling as it should although had been adjusted in the past to compensate for build up, Iam just trying to figure out the loacation of the screw, is it on the carb somewhere, or is it inside the carb, or do I adjust it with the throttle cables, it is a 75, merc 650, 65hp, thanks again guys.

Jay, You are going to want to adjust the idle stop screw, an possibly the throtle cable to lower the idle speed. You should see a screw marked as "Idle Stop". Loosen it a couple of turns ans see what happens. If you need to adjust the cable, you will want to turn the barrrell nut on the throttle cable.

Re: wheres the idle screw

Disconnect the throttle cable first. Adjust the idle speed using the idle stop screw. Then and only then mess with the cable. It is adjusted for one purpose only, that's to make it the right length. Hold the throttle linkage against its stop and then bring the cable up to its attachment point on the linkage. If the two points don't line up exactly, adjust the trunion (threaded barrel) so they do. Then attach it. The reason you dont adjust the cable for idle speed is if you shorten it to speed up the engine, the linkage won't return to idle.

ok I think I just fucked myself over guys, I tried to adjust the throttle screw and it didn't do anything, I loosened it up and the throttle woudn't go any lower, so I tryed adjusting the throttle cable a couple turns then went and move the throttle a bit to see if it would seat itself and then I heard a POP and this piece broke off(pics below)...have I fucked myself and engine? i was thinking if not to much presure is on this piece I could us a little JB weld....I don't have much money to spare and really need the boat to work next week :'(

Re: wheres the idle screw (HELP)

Take the arm off the engine, take the two parts to a local fabricator that can work with cast aluminum. It can be welded. When you have it installed again. Follow my instructions on setting the idle and leave the cable disconnected. As I mentioned, the cable is NOT to be adjusted for idle speed. Its a length adjustment. If you adjust the cable for more travel in one direction you lessen the travel in the other and end up doing what you did.
