well i am still here. put on a short little fireworks show for a couple friends saturday morning when i was lighting the furnace in our cottage. not exactly sure what i did wrong this time (have lit this same furnace atleast 20 times before with no problem)but apparently there was too much gas built up and kaboom! my friend and his wife were outside shoveling the deck off and he said fire came out of the chimney and blew the chimney cap up over the tree tops. all that happen to me was a little heat on the face (nothing even singed) and i had to change my underwear. like they say god looks out for the foolish.

Re: WHEWWWW!

If you were lighting it for the first time in awhile it sounds like maybe your pilot light was feeding gas without the flame being present. Then when you stick the match in it ignites.

If it had been running and had quit for some reason and you were relighting it the main gas element could have left some unburned gas in the plenum.

To check you pilot light circuit turn the gas service valve off ahead of the furnace control valve.

After the flames go out and once everything has cooled off to ambient temp check and see if you smell gas in the plenum. If no gas smell is present then put a match over the pilot light. Now open the main gas valve and see if your pilot light lights up WITHOUT you have to mash the little red button. If it does you need to replace your main gas valve.

Good luck. If you have any doubts about how to do the call a professional.

Re: WHEWWWW!

FSHKPR I think I found your chimney cap here in my front yard. Let me know if you want it back, it's a little burnt and melted.

Good thing you're not hurt, that's a funny visual though. :D

If that’s the worst damage caused by the accident count yourself lucky!!! Could have been much, much worse.
