Re: which 4 stroke is best

are all four strokes the same???
---------
Hi,
Some are very similar:
Yamaha F225 4-stroke and Mercury SaltWater 225 EFI are basically the same outboards.

Suzuki DF220, DF225 and Johnson 220, 225 4-stroke are the same outboards.
Suzuki have also a DF250 4-stroke.

Honda BF220 and BF225, they are their own made outboards, no other outboard manufacturer use them under another name.

does a 225hp four stroke burn the same amount of fuel on all brands???
---------
Probably rather similar. The cost to buy them and get a good price is probably more important, and also very important that You can get it serviced where You live. Warranty may be different and some has special offerings until March 31 this Year I have seen (Yamaha and Suzuki).

All above 4-strokes should be fine, they use all latest technology for fuel injection (EFI) and is CARB 3-star rated.
With most outboards You get prop, instruments and controlbox (but I'm not sure You get it with Honda BF220 and BF225 as standard and that will add a little to the cost to buy a Honda).

Your subject, "which 4-stroke is best"
-------
I do not know, all should be fine really. I have read tests of at least Yamaha F225 and Honda BF225 and they are both very good. Since Mercury SaltWater 225 EFI is basically a Yamaha F225 that should be a good outboard also.
Suzuki DF220, 225, 250 I have not read any test on but Suzuki makes quality outboards so I would not be worried to buy any of them.

I had a Suzuki outboard (2-stroke) before but use a Yamaha F115 (4-stroke) now.

Good luck!

Tim,

"In this latest study, J.D. Power and Associates ranked Yamaha highest in Customer Satisfaction for Four-Stroke Outboards."

"Like last year, Yamaha achieved the highest index score among four-stroke outboard engines, with high marks in nearly every key engine attribute measured, particularly in the ability to accelerate rapidly and for performance at cruising speed."

"The report also indicated that in the case of both two- and four-stroke outboards, the larger the engine, the fewer the problems.

I can attest to these comments. IMO, the Yamaha F225 would be your best bet. But as Bo has said, you really can't go wrong with any of them.

I read a side by side test of a 225 Suzuki and Yamaha in Popular Mechanics on similar equiped boats. Suzuki was better on fuel and had a high top end speed. I can't remember all of the other parameters they tested since I was just flipping through it on the newstand. All of the outboards are good and it's a matter of price, dealer and service availability.

Re: which 4 stroke is best

Actually, they were two different boats. The Suzuki DF225 was on a Triton 2286 (22'8") and the Yamaha F225 was on a Cobia 230 (23'10").

The hulls are a little different, and there were other differences as well, such as the Cobia holding about 200 lbs more fuel, and an optional wind-catching hard top which greatly effected top speeds. It appears with only 400 miles, neither outboard was broke-in.

Regardless, the Yamaha did 1.81 mpg and the Suzuki did 1.91 mpg. Not a big difference in the scheme of things.

"It's important to note, though, that our Cobia came with an optional hardtop supported by a jungle gym of stainless steel tubing and holding an accessory equipment box with all the aerodynamic finesse of a kitchen cabinet...

...Suzuki's David Greenwood, who came along to oversee the Triton/Suzuki, agreed that without the hardtop, acceleration and top speed of the two boats and motors would be comparable."

The new Suzuki is a probably a fine outboard. But the Yamaha has been around a while. That's where I'd put my money. ;)
