I am planing on buying a new motor for my sailboat. I am pretty sure that i can get a new evinrude 9.9 longshaft for 1500 bucks. or maybe it was 2500, but i remember checking out prices last year.

Gander mtn has a 9.9 mercury for 2600.

But what brand is the best? I have always been partial to evinrude 2 strokes.

These small motors are som cheap, you are better off going brand new. I bought a used motor, and i had to put 600 bucks into the piece of junk to repair it. I prob spent a total of 1500 last year on a used motor and repairs. and it still has no reverse.

Their all good motors now a days. You can get a brand new 9.8 tohatsu from onlineoutboards.com for cheap, like $1800 to start, tohatsu makes nissan, and mercs up to 30hp and they are great motors if not the best for the money.I haven't found any 2strokes available anymore except a few yamahas here and there but they are charging out the wazoo for them because they know people will pay the high prices for them.So you may have to go with a new 4stroke which only weighs 84lbs.I have a nissan 9.8 at my house and man it's so quiet and starts on one pull everytime.I just checked the website and a 20"manual start is $1799 includes tax and shipping,a 25"shaft,electric start is $2099 including tax and shipping,a 20"shaft electric start and power tilt is $2499 including tax and shipping, and a 25"shaft electric start and power tilt is $2549 including tax and shipping so you have a ton of options. If i quoted a merc you would be way higher for basically the same engine and nissan is just a hair higher and is the same engine just different decals.Tohatsus are outstanding outboards and i'm sure there will be more who chime in on them.If you want to go used just look on craigslist, you must be patient but you can find a great deal on there.Good luck.

They are all equally good or bad...Depending on how you take care of it.
