Which Adhesive Sealant

Trying to decide which sealant to use for below water line trim tab reinstall. Has a 1/2 hole going thru the transom which will have the feed tube to the pump. Removed the old and the sealant was still pliable. Held to the hull and tab hinge very well but felt like and looked like white rubber. Maybe it was 5200, have never had to take anything apart which I knew was put together with it before.

Would automatically use 5200 but I might need to take it apart again if the hinge gets cracked again

You may want to consider 3M 4200 --


From what I understand -- Same great qualities as 5200 but a bit more pliable & its removable.


I have seen 5200 pull gel coat from a hull - They are not kidding when they say permanent.

Ditto on 3M 4200 - Remains pliable and rubbery like 5200, but not permanent.

I think 4200 is what sealed the tabs looking at the pics in the other thread. You got it apart too easily, unlike 5200.

You could also look at Loctite PL marine. It's a polyether instead of a polyurethane like 5200.

3M 4000 is a polyether adhesive. States it has about the same holding as 4200 and can adhere to more things like plastics (lexan), and is also UV resistant. Did look at it but already ordered the 4200

5200 if not permanent, 4200 if not.

4200 is more than adequate for the job. Don’t need much. The screws hold it in place.

FWIW: my transom is over 1” thk. where the fitting connects. Sealed the inside of the hole with a generous smattering of marine epoxy. When dry, put a light coating of 4200 on the face of the actuator and screwed it on.

No need to pack the hole with sealer. Full access to the fittings if need be and removing an actuator is easy as removing three screws and a sharp hit to the side to break it loose.
