Hello,

We are looking to purchase a boat and want to make sure we are looking into the right style of boat.

We are looking for something in the ~25k price range with the expectation of putting a couple more grand in to outfit the boat if it needs anything.

We want to use it for going around the seattle area and over night trips to the san juan islands, basically the local area.

We are novices, but after some time of shorter trips we'd like to venture out south down the coast of oregon and up to vancouver island. Then eventually when we have more experience, down to San Francisco or up the BC coast.

My wife and I don't have any children, but we do have a couple of small 20-30lb dogs (a whippet and 2 basenjis) we'd like to take with us. We would also like to have onboard a some friends (say 4 others) for light entertaining, and maybe take 2 other adults with us from time to time on the shorter trips. We'd like to have enough room to take 2 bikes with us on the longer trips.

We expect to keep it wet moored in the seattle area.

What kind of features should we be looking for for these uses? What style of power boat?

My wife likes the older style boats like 1960s chris craft connie or chris craft catalina style from the 70s or 80s. Are these boats very practical? One boat we both like is the 1979 Chris Craft 28.

What kind of lifespan can a boat have?

We'd like to get a ~28-33 foot boat, is that reasonable for novices(after taking courses), assuming we'd start out with closer trips and venturing to farther destinations as we get more experience.

Thanks,
Jeff & Willow

welcome aboard!
I like the Chrissy's as well, but there are many
choices. I suggest spending some time around the
local marina talkin with folks. the loading ramp
is also good to check out some diff. styles.
captains are MORE than eager to tell you about
their boats and won't "sell" you 4 no good reason.
see something you like? spend a few bucks to have
her professionaly surveyed.
best of luck,
M.Y.

Do a search on this site and discover Magster's thread on his 26' Tolly. Even though it's a 26', it's larger than most 29' and is perfect for your area. You should be able to get a semi-decent one for your budget.
Or...do a search for boats in your size and price range in the Seattle area on boattrader.com You're coming into the spring...and most expensive time to buy a boat...but there are lot's of deals out there, especially in Puget Sound.

Thanks for your help, I'll look at that.

We actually aren't looking to buy this season, so maybe we should plan on buying in winter time?

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Here's an idea, this just popped in the old noodle. You might try a weekend visit to Friday Harbor during peak boating season, check out the marina and talk to the owners of boats you might be interested in. Most likely they are doing exactly what you are planning to do.

Everyone likes to talk about their boat, right?

Absoluetly. Go to a busy marina at peak season and chat with the owners. One other thing, I wouldn't worry too much about buying a boat during the summer. I found that off season there's very few boats to choose from they're no deal really. In the peak season there's lots for sale so if you don't like the boat or price, carry on, there's lots to choose from. Buy a boat that you visually like right off the bat, one that has a good brand name, first impressions are important. Next, be sure to get a survey so you don't get stuck with a lemon or with any expensive repairs. The survey will tell you everything; what the boat is really worth, what it would cost to replace, if the safety equipment is in good order and anything that needs maintenance. I'm jealous... I love boat shopping!
