Which chev engine replaces a volvo penta 5.0 gi 1999 model

Hello, I need to get a replacement block ( original has seized and they want big bucks for rebuild ) for my regal 292 commodore, it has twin volvo penta 5.0 gi engines running a sx drive unit, would someone be kind enough to advise what is the chev equivalent of this engine, I think its a 305 but id like to know for sure as it seems the 305 onbly went up till 1999 ?? You need a short block with a one piece seal(blocks after 1986) . If you were replacing both engines, I would be suggesting you purchase 350s.

If you are replacing the heads too, you probably want a long block with vortec heads depending on if that is what you have now.

Here is an example of a reman long block with Vortec heads.
5.0L Vortec Marine Engine, REMAN (1996-2010)

here is a new one:
5.0L (305ci) Vortec Base Marine Engine (1996-2013 Replacement)
They will give you $150/ea for your old Vortec heads. You could sell them on eBay for more though

thanks for the info, if i go for a 350 will there be anything that ill need to swap or extra work that needs to be done or will the 305 stuff fit etc ??

I would think you would need to swap both engines if you are going to a 5.7 - Stick with the 5.0 for a single swap.

They are identical on the outside. Only issue may be the fuel injection and DonS could answer that question. That would be the only issue.

Yes you would have to retune your ecm for the 5.7. You could create a lot of problems running a 5.0 and a 5.7 side by side
