I have an older Dell and friends have new ones, we find them reliable. As for service, we havent needed any.
The choice between notebook and desktop comes down to whether you need your computer away from the desk.

Typing on a 2 year old

notebook as I write this. My daughter has the Latitude notebook I had for 3 years. Both are on broadband and have been very reliable.

I have had a local conehead (short for computer professional) build my last two with the features I wanted and without the features I didn't want.

Upgrades have been easy and inexpensive.

I have had a dell latitude CPxJ 750 (Pentium III) for, hmm, I think about 6 or 8 years now. Still works as good as the day it was new and performs remarkably well for it's age. Also have a couple of P4's as well and other than the performance improvement for games and photo processing, there is no difference between them and the old dell while surfing the net, word processing, etc. As a matter of fact I have the old dell set up as a wireless access point for the other laptops too. It's a little workhorse.

I have a Dell 8600 (centrino P4) with a 17" display and it works fine. I use it with a wireless system at home.

The only problems I have read about is the cooling fan. Invest in a can of spray air and keep the cooling passages clean. A great piece of preventive maintenance.

Bob

At Frito-Lay we use nothing but Dell. Mine stays on 24/7 and are changed out every two years. Never have had a problem. Well the broken sprinkler line did play h-ll with it. The just do not make them water proof.

I wouldnt buy PC period! They are cheap junk that always break down. If you must buy a pc then get a dell they have a great service plan and warrenty. You get what you pay for with comps.

Huh? You'll have to explain that...

JB has it...a properly built PC built from individual componets is the way to go.

On the other hand...it's hard to argue with the price of a Dell. They're really pretty good. My Dell at work is on 24/7 also and we beat the snot out of them.

That's a bit tricky if you want a notebook.

Be careful.. I thought Bill Gates was an "evil capatalist". MS Windows, talk about a monopoly. Not complaining, just pointing out a fact.

Opinions, over the web, are just that-OPINIONS.
