Hello,

I am building a 383 over in the Non-repair I/O section and I want to get a new coupler along with he new engine. I have too many other questions going on in my build thread so I wanted to start this one and ask just about the coupler. The original engine was a 1986 Merc 260/Alpha One. I'm not sure of the engine serial #. It's a 1pc rear main seal. Can someone tell me the correct part # for the coupler I need? Or if you need more information let me know and I'll get it.

Ayuh,.... Which coupler did ya take off,..??
Did it bolt to the crankshaft, or flywheel...

I'd think ya need the standard triangular flywheel mounted coupler...

The one I took off was the triangular coupler that bolts to the flywheel. It just looks like there are a few different types of triangular couplers so I wasn't sure which one was the right one.

Nothing is really wrong with it - it just from 1986 and has about 800 hours on it. I'm building a 383 that is going to be pushing 400-420 hp and I want to reduce the number of things that could go wrong by overpowering the alpha drive. Do couplers wear out? Or are they in great shape until you hit a rock and they get spun?

Ayuh,... Couplers wear out from a lack of Grease,....
They Blow, from Bad alignment...

The tops of the spline teeth are Flat, 'n 'bout an 1/8" wide... You can See if it's worn, the teeth will be pointy...

If yer's passes Inspection, I'd run it....

Hittin' a rock is more apt to shear a tooth, or shaft in the drive....

When I pulled the drive over the winter and put in the alignment bar, the alignment was spot on. I just went out and looked at the coupler and the splines actually look really good. They're flat and just about 1/8" wide. I guess I'll go ahead and run it. I guess it'll save me some $ too. Thanks Bondo
