Which drive to use

Hi All,

I have a thread on the restoration forum but thought that the engine / drive questions should be here. So here goes.

I bought a 1986 boat nearly 3 years ago. It had 2 x mrecruiser 260's and Alpha 1 gen 1 drives. All of this has been removed and the engines have been sold on. The drives were fitted, out of symmetry and the cutouts are not great.

I bought 2 GM V8 diesels, with velvet box's and TRS drives/transom assemblies (as a package). The drives are in very good condition, they had been stripped and checked over about 3 years before I got them and about 1 year before I got them, they had new rams and other parts.

The engines are 6.5 twin turbo diesels. They have been hand built to peninsular spec and more. They should be about 330BHP at 3600 rpm and about 495ft.lbs, at 2200 rpm peak torque.

I bought the engine package when money was not a problem, times are very different now and I must be careful. I plan to replace the transom so new drive cut outs will be made.

My questions are:

1, Is there any reasons not to use the TRS setup? I know they are old and discontinued but maybe they would outlive the boat. I also believe that Konrad make a drive that replaces the TRS, so these could be added at a future date.

2, Would there be a better drive setup to use? I know that the TRS and the velvet box's add weight and there's more that could go wrong, but I do like the idea of a smooth for or aft gear selector. It has been suggested that Bravo 1X (Bravo diesel) would be the best way forward. One has even suggested that the Bravo 1 would handle the torque??

Any suggestions would be good to hear.

Thanks

Peter

Re: Which drive to use

You are right on all counts. The TRS, as good as they are, are discontinued. I know nothing of Konrad, except what I'm reading on their website. The Bravo drives are good to about 450hp, so I think they'd be good for your V8s (I have a turbo 6.5L GM diesel in my tow vehicle, so I know and love these engines). Although I haven't looked specifically, I suspect the main difference between a 'standard' Bravo and the Bravo Xs will be the ratios. The diesel will push a taller drive than a similar HP petrol engine, mainly due to that fantastic torque :D. If you really like the smooth shift, you'd be happy with the Bravo, as it has a cone clutch (not a dog clutch like an Alpha) and is just as smooth as a Velvet drive....

Dittos.

Me too! The 6.5L engine (in my Tow Vehicle) too! 200,000 miles and still going strong (94 Suburban, bought it new)

Peninsulars highest HP engine does 320Hp (turbo supercharged AND after-cooled) at 3600 RPM.

This would require you to probably use a Bravo I/II/III drive of somewhere around 1.36:1 ratio just to get any sort of top end speed.

I don't know if the Bravo I, II or III is available in the diesel "version" at ratios below about 1.5:1

Using a Prop Slip Calculator with 1.5:1 ratio, at 3600 RPM (Peninsular 6.5L governed speed)& 28p props ( 10% slip), yields a few mph short of 60 MPH.

A 6.5L engine in my 21' Four Winns Liberator would be an OK fit but the Peninsular engine is VERY expensive. It would need to be mated with a Bravo 1 or III "X" and would need to be a (numerically) high final ratio

I would want a 1.36:1 ratio if one was available so I could use the same 26p props I am using now with my 1.81:1 ratio Bravo III
This would put my max prop RPM within 100 RPM of my current prop RPM at WOT (4600 RPM 7.4L V-8)

(Of course, not many of us are going to run at the MAX governed speed for very long, Just for FUEL FLOW reasons! let alone for longevity reasons.)

I don't think you will want to mess with Alphas at all. I think they would break in short order and you would have to have some sort of "EFI" interrupt for shifting. (Peninsular diesel uses a NON-electronic DB2 fuel injection pump btw I guess you could electrically interrupt the fuel-shutoff solenoid)

If you're talking about the boat in your avatar, how big is it? I am guessing somewhere around 25ft, 6000lbs, ?

That's an approx 55 mph boat with the previous engines and drives?

E D I T :: I looked at your other threads. 36ft boat 12,000 lbs maybe?

If you are considering Konrads, you already know they have "drop-in" TRS replacements. and the V-drive transmissions eliminate shift interrupt problems. (They shift like "velvet"!!)

But WOW!! B I G $ $ $

Post some pictures!

Cheers,

Rick

Edit, let me also add that with the twin turbos, and high boost/fuel capability, I don't have to tell you that you better watch the EGT and boost in those engines. You will probably have to ability to "smoke'm"!!

Mine's a Toyota Landcruiser, 100 series. So it's not the original engine. :D:D:D

Re: Which drive to use

I've got some of the technical information (and photos) on MY WEBSITE, if you're interested... Scroll down a bit, past all the boring boat stuff.. ;)
Pretty cool!

I would want a 4L80E transmission in it though for towing. I got one of the first Electronic TD 6.5L Suburbans on the west coast.

17 years now and GM still doesn't offer the Sub in a diesel (last one was 1999 model year)
