Which is best paint for stern drive?

When i removed the barnacles from my drive after 5 months in salt water a lot if the paint came off where the barnacles were stuck on leaving exposed aluminium, can somebody suggest a good paint/undercoat and should i then paint over with antifoul? cheers. Happy new year!

Any marine store will have the product you need.Buy the more expensive.
FOLLOW!!!!!!! the directions.
Regular anti-fouling will corrode your aluminum.Make sure you have new zincs and even add a couple to the drive.Jerry

Why would you say that? If you Over Zinc a boat, the outdrive and transom shield will protect the zincs.
Without knowing even what kind of drive he is talking about, it's hard to give any answers about anything, even the best paint.
Not sure I buy into the "Most Expensive" as being the best either.

I remember reading in a Mercruiser maintenance manual that the recommended paint was PPG.

What the WizeOne said. I use the professional gloss black, in the silver can.

It's larger than the regular cans. I use it on the props also.

The zincs are there to protect the metal parts.They corrode before the transom shield and outdrive does.Not the other way around.J

Just like I stated, if you OVER zinc a drive the anodes can be ineffective and let the drive actually corrode faster than when under zinced.
Merc doesn't recommend or use Zinc for their anodes, they now (since 91) use an aluminum alloy for salt water anodes.

Any bare aluminum on the drive should be sanded and sprayed with Zinc Chromate primer then painted.Its an etching primer that bonds very well with bare metal.

Zinc Chromate primer is old technology.
Most manufacturers have moved to epoxy primer.
The EPA will be shutting down production of products containing chromate.

on the new Volvo manufacturer recommendation is to use the same bottom paint as your hull. sounded weird to me but it has worked for quite some time without problems.

Scrape the Crud off it,+ Shoot it...

Dang it bondo, I didn't realize you practiced my painting method. Always worked for me, but I never really got all excited about a pretty outdrive. Oh, and I did use RustOLeum. It stood up to the acetone when I wiped it off to spray it again.

If you really want to make a Rustoleum Rattle Can paint job look good, hit it with a coat of Rustoleum Clear after you apply the gloss black. It really makes it look good!

Ayuh,.... 'ell Don,... I've learned Everything I know from You....
Of Course I'm using Your painting method.....

I used to sand everything, Primer everything,+ the following year, it looked like it did the year before...
Before I shot it...

Now it's just Scrape,+ Shoot....Annually, or sooner if it makes it onto the trailer over the season....

I slip in salt and My best year was this one. I used to scrape and paint every year to get the barnacles off. Last spring I touched up all bare spots with primer and paint. When that was dry I scuff sanded and Applied 2 coats by brush of TRILUX antifoul paint for alumnium. This year I had 1 banacle on the drive. I can now powerwash and repaint without scraping. No corossion at all as well.

I bought a quart of paint and split it with a bud that also wet slips in salt and he had similar results. Another plus is it an ablative paint and wears away over time, so no buildup. The paint heldup well except for the lower skeg but that always looses the paint cause of the shallow water here.

Ayuh,....

I use the same Rattlecan Rustoeum as Cheif Al,...... Gloss Black, in the Pro. can....

Rattlecan in 1 hand,+ a piece of Cardboard in the other, to catch the overspray....
