I am looking at 30' cruisers and I want to know if one engine is better than the other. A 30' Bayliner with a 350 V8 5.7L or a 30' Chaparral with 5.0 EFI?
Both engines are twin Mercruisers. I am trying to find out if the EFI is better.

My opinion, if both boats have only single engines, then both boats are grossly underpowered and you should keep on looking....

I agree that they are both under powered. But to answer the question, bayline boats are an "economy" boat, while Chapparal has much more build and finish quality.

But chapparal engine boxes are almost always teeight!

Scott..

The 5.0 efi's put out 250 ponies, I believe the 350's could be as low as 215hp and up to 270hp it will depend on the carbs and exact model such as 2bbl or 4bbl and are the 350's magnum series engines or not . IMHO I would go with Chapparal becuase the boat overall is better quality and the EFI's will be smoother running and more fuel efficient over carb'd 350's

I can't really provide an opinion on the amount of power you need , however, I shopped around for three years for a boat and everytime came back to the Chaparral which I ended up buying. They really build one of the nicer boats in the industry. We bought the 260 cruiser and I have about 49 hours. I've received many compliments from fellow boaters even some Sea Ray boaters. Good luck
