I have found a matched set Chevy I6 Mercruiser (165 HP) engine and outdrive complete with gimble and transom mount for $1675 deliivered to my door. Is this a good deal? I need to replace at the minmum the lower unit of my outdrive and i think the outdrive on the boat now is geared wrong so I would be into purchasing a whole new outdrive unit. The motor I have now is currently out of a 60'2 truck and I just slapped the intake and valve covers from my old mercruiser engine on. The engine badly needs rebuilt. I found a mercruiser 165 for sale with a busted block that I could purchase for $350 I also found some outdrives for the mercruiser 165 for sale for about $1000 for two of them. Whats the best deal here, is there a better deal out there? Should I look to getting a 4.3l setup that is suppossed to be in the boat?b

The bottom line is what is the best bet to get my boat running for this season.

the best bet for getting the boat going for THIS season is whichever is the closest match to what is currently in the boat. every different part can add days to a project. went through this with freinds boat in oct. and my boat now. minor changes causing major delays.

Re: Which is the good Deal?

If the original matched set you mentioned in your post is in good shape (both engine and outdrive) I would go with that. The price is excellent but you can find some real good deals on e-bay and remember, a bargain is in the eyes of the beholder; what's a good deal for you might not be to someone else. DO NOT use an automobile engine in your boat. I don't know how many times knowing people on this site have said that but others seem to think they're smarter than the experts like DieselWalt, Bondo, Trent, Lubedude; go with what was meant to be in there and replace it all. Please! I know what I should do, open my own sea-tow business. Then, all the folks who know better...
