here's what the transducer looks like:

I'm trying to figure out which position to mount the transducer: middle finger or index finger?

I'm thinking index finger location but not sure?

Middle finger will probably have the transducer in the air when you are on plane.

Actually... I'd make a temporary clamp-on mount so I could test assorted locations and find where I could have the transducer in water while on plane, giving good depth reading, plus NOT create a huge rooster tail kicking water back over the transom.

how in the world do I make that? about the only thing I can think of would be to hook the transducer to a thick piece of wood or a sturdy piece of metal and c-clamp it to the transom? dont know if that would work for that entire side of the boat though. hmmm

I will take some pics tonight. so you want me to take one from looking from the ground up? or of a level complete transom from the back looking at it? just want to make sure I get what you want.

on a fiberglass hull, it can be mounted inside the boat with no loss of accuracy. And you'll still see fish that aren't there  just kidding about the fish!

You can get a shoot-thru-hull transducer (sometimes called a 'puck' transducer (see e.g. something like this: http://www.iboats.com/520-IHD-600-W...3659011--session_id.868085529--view_id.118533). Some manufacturers say you can epoxy your transom-mount tranducer inside the hull, but I think you'll have better luck with a puck transducer.

You need to mount it on a place where the hull is solid - a cored/sandwiched hull won't work so well for this type of transducer.

My transom-mount said to keep the 'ducer away from chines and the like, so I don't know if the index finger placement would work so well. I agree with Bondo that a pic of the underside of the boat might help.

yup, where it's solid. Mine is an El Cheapo PBd in; works well and has for years

I'm wondering if it would be ok to put the transducer down in this recessed area hanging from the upper portion off to the right? sorry its a bad pic.
