The below link is a very interesting take on motor oil, but it throws me into a state of confusion as to what I should run in my reman 318. The tag on the motor says 20-50 Castol recommended, non-syn. The tag and motor are from the mid-90's. The boat is a Penn Yan Montego 22'.

But after reading the link below I'm thinking I should be running 5-30 Mobil 1. My motor has about 200 hours on it.

Your take would be appreciated.....

You can very rarely go wrong with what the manufacturer specifies.

Higher viscosity oils are generally better suited for marine use engines because of fuel dilution thinning (from high idle times, low temperature thermostats, rich carb settings) and mechanical shearing (from high RPM usage), both of which will 'thin' the oil out in short order.

Marine use is what the manufacturers would call severe service conditions and the oil is spec'ed accordingly.

probably the most important consideration is whether or not the engine oil is water cooled through an engine oil cooler

and you came to a forum to end the confusion

A place where everyone has their own opinion of what oil is best.

I guess a 318 Deetroit wouldn't be a 22' boat.

This oil thread like all the others, will go the same way.

You will get replies that indicate what everyone else 'likes' to use.

It really doesn't matter what oil you use as much as it matters when and how often you change it.

Just use whatever the (orig) manufacturer suggests and change it when they suggest and the engine will "die" of an unrelated ailment. (like freeze damage)

Cheers,

Rick
