I puchased a boat recently with an 1992 Johnson 90h.p. Tracker Pro series outboard and the person I bought it from told me to only use Johnson/Evinrude oil td-100 or something like that, but when I checked the oil tank, it was color blue..... would it be quicksilver oil? if it is should I burn it off and switch to the Johnson oil? or keep it consistant.

I wouldn't waste your money on Johnson oil, especially XD-100, as it's a full synthetic oil.

Stick to regular TC-W3 oil and it will be more than adequate. I usually find good deals on Penzoil in Wal-Mart or some auto part stores. Also the Wal Mart brand Super Tech is pretty good oil that will be fine in your engine.

Quicksilver is a rip off, it is Merc oil packaged in a flashy bottle and priced twice as much as anything comparable.

As long as you use TC-W3 oil you will be fine. Buy whatever you can find at a good price. I have been using Yamalube all season only because I scored 5 gallons of it for $40 last year. Once it's gone I will be back to Super Tech or Penzoil, I also hear Star Brite makes a decent oil.

Not sure why the previous owner would tell you to ONLY use XD-100. Total waste of money in a carbed engine in my opinion.

By the way also, don't put 93 Octane gas in it either thinking it's gonna do any good, the best gas for these engines is 87, don't buy into the "93 is cleaner" BS, 87 runs just as clean, octane has nothing to do with cleaning and 87 runs nice and cool in these engines.

Any TCW-3 oil is just fine. (in my opinion) others may vary !!!!

I've been running Valvoline Synthetic Fortified (not fully synthetic) TC-W3 oil for a while. Works fine and is cheapest around.

Also tried BP Hi-Tide (in Oz) and Castrol oil but they seem to smoke more, so I went back to the Valvoline.
