I want to paint my 18 foot fiberglass boat with the roll and tip method. Do you reccomend the rustoleum or the inturlex brightside? thay are roughly the same price. But how about easy of applying them and durability?

Re: which paint?

You've asked a question that has many answers. Several folks swear the Rustoleum is a great product, (I think most of them are referring to the Marine grade).

Interluxes has a growing reputation as a top quality finish that can be applied by the common person without a lot of special equipment.

So the question that remains is durability and ease of applicaton. This is a tough one to answer but I'll try to rap it in a nutshell for you.

If you intend to store your boat on a trailer with bunks or you leave your boat in the water for over 72 hours then the paint you choose for the bottom of your boat, up to the normal waterline should be formulated for those conditions. Interlux's VC Performance is what I chose.

If you need a super hard bump and scrape resitant finish that can be easily cleaned repeatedly but is not submerged for long periods of time then you need a product formulated for that. I chose Interlux Perfection.

For most topside applications that are subject to human abuse (read as upredicatble loose cannon buddies and kids) you should choose a product that is easy to acquire, easy to apply and most importantly, easy to store. I chose Interlux Brightside.

The bad part about Interlux products (Brightside is the most lienient) is that they must be applied under strict conditions. The manufacturer is very good about providing documentation and even video's of the processes.

Finally, it's a question of if you're time and money budgets allow you to use Interlux correctly. If not, you're better value would definitly be in a great product like Rustoleum. My order of Interlux products for a 1991, 18' Starcraft painted to match the 2009 Model year, (you can see it on their website), cost me slightly over 700.00.

Hope that helps and doesn't make the matter more confusing for you.

Yup, you have to choose the paint that best fits your specific requirements.

There are so many differences in each manufacturers line of paints to match the specific application it would make your head roll if you tried to make sense of them all and make a decision ( mine started to roll after looking at 3 manufacturers and then found out how many more I'd have to sift through! ).

We've had good success with the roll and tip method using both paints on the board. I remember reading an off site forum guy that painted his Corvair with Rustoleum, and then wet sanded and buffed the paint out to a finish on par with any other, and it held up beautifully with a year under his belt ( painted outside in the driveway, mind you! ).

Re: which paint?

if you read some of the wood boat forums a lot of them recommend latex based paints. i think how good a paint job lasts is mostly proper preparation and how good it looks is proper application. is it possible to actually buy a bad paint today?

Ayuh,... I resemble that remark,...

I've shot boats with the Best paint $200. a gallon can Buy,...
And,...
I've painted Alot of Boats,+ other general Stuff with $20. a gallon Rustoleum,....

Both products returned Excellent service,...
And,...
Both products Scratched off when Scraped.....

Needless to say,....
I rarely see the need of $200. a gallon paint anymore,...
I'm Not doing Show Boats,+ Dock Queens.....

Agree, Interlux Perfection is some hard stuff but if you don't follow the instructions to the letter it won't be any better than a far lesser valued product. The problem with Interlux is that there are a lot of variables that can make it go wrong in a New York minute and the worst part is that you might not even know it. I guess that can be said about many of the other products too.
One of the reasons I chose it was of the personal attention I seemed to get from their support department. I felt very secure about my choice knowing that knowledgable help was just a phone call or email away. I never got a canned answer once. Each one pertained precisely to the information that I had provided them about my boat and my requirements.

Soooooo maybe I just paid a heck of a lot of money for a support group.

You oughta see what I pay my wifes shrink! Turnabout is fair play!... LOL.
