which prop do I get?

Hey guys,

I know absolutely nothing about props. I have a 1962 Evinrude 40 H.P. motor. I need a new prop. (the hub is spun). I found two different props on line at Michigan Wheel Props. One is 12" pitch, the second one is 11-1/2" pitch. Would the 1/2" of pitch make a difference at all? Which will give me greater top speed at full throttle? I do not have a tachometer on the boat.

note: the prop I have now only says Michigan 5-5. No other markings that I can see.

Thanks for any replies.

If the prop you have now has been working okay, take it to a prop shop and have a new hub put in it.

Yea, I'll try that. It's not your typical hub however. There does not seem to be any rubber in it. It is a brass part that looks like it is pressed into the aluminum prop housing. They probably press it in with an arbor press or something on that order. I was hoping I could get my prop re-hubbed (or repaired in some manner). I guess a local prop shop would be able to tell me immediately if it can be repaired or not.
Thanks!

I spun my prop on my 1960 evinrude big twin 40 and I knocked out the hub the inner part was brass but there was still a rubber sleeve around it for a press fit the rubber is designed to take the shock so other parts arent damaged.

I'll promise you it has a rubber hub. Unless it is a racing prop or something else weird.

You haven't said anything about your boat. However, the 12" came on motors from the factory and is the best all-purpose prop for the average boat. If the boat is something other than "average", well....

Re: which prop do I get?

My problem should be solved. I ordered a new prop from iboats and they said it should be here overnight to me for less than a $10 delivery charge! My boat is just a fishing boat, nothing special. I ordered the 12" pitch for it. The old prop more than likely has the rubber hub between the brass and prop housing. It just looked like to me that there was no room in between for some rubber to fit, and it is a very tight fit between the brass spindle and the aluminum housing.
Thanks all!
