I have a 1986 3.0 OMC Cobra and need some opinions on which manual to get. SElOC, CLYMER, or Original OMC...which one is best?

I have all three sitting here. First choice the OMC. Second, the Seloc. Hope that helps!

Depends on who you are, Cobra.

The Seloc and Clymer manuals are written for consumers who do most of their own maintenance. There is little to choose between them. Some prefer one, some the other. I have and use both.

OEM manuals tend to be written for trained Marine Techs who have special tools and need to be able to do everything, but are sometimes frustrating to consumers because of calls for special tools and equipment.

OEM manuals go into more detail, but expect you to know what you are doing.

Hope that helps. :)

One thing I have noticed that the OMC manual was much better at was pictures, lots of pictures. That was very important to me since quite often the name of a given part was totally new to me and I had no idea what they were talking about. With the picture, I knew.
Since the OMC manual usually only deals with a very few models in each book, they are able to go much more into detail, both in text and pictures.
Just one more opinion. :)

Charles

It seemed every time I opened a Seloc or Clymer manual I found, "Consult manufacturer's maintenance manual" As far as special tools, does it matter, the job still has to be done. At least you know the tool will have to be borrowed, bought or manufactured to complete the job.
