I'm wanting to buy the Mercruiser service manuals for my boat, and am hoping someone can verify which ones I need. I have a 1987 4.3l 175hp with an Alpha 1 outdrive. I think I need service manual #6 for the outdrive, and #7 for the engine. Are these the correct service manuals for my application? Thanks....

Year is meaningless......you have to go by serial number.

I'm a little surprised I'd need to go by serial number. Looking around for manuals, I've only seen 2 for the 4.3l V6's (I'm a noob, so I sure could be wrong). Do they have more than one manual that covers 4.3l V6 non-vortec? Seems I've read the switch to Vortec was sometime the early 90's? Outdrive is an Alpha 1 Gen 1 (I'm pretty sure), is there more than one manual for this also?

Is there someone who can look up which manuals I need based on serial number, or is there a site I can go to and look it up based on serial number?

Thanks...

Book #7 is for the 83 to 93 V6 engines. So you should be within that for the manuals. But for parts you really should have a serial number due to yearly changes.
#6 Is also the manual you need for the drive, but again, for parts you should have the serial number.

Thanks Don.

I don't have a need for parts yet, but when I do, I'll make sure to bring my serial numbers with me. I always buy a service manual for my vehicles and do most of my own work on them. I'm just trying to be prepared for when I have a problem, and to help with normal maintenance.

#6 and #7 it is. Thanks again for your help!
