I have searched this forum and other postings around the internet and I am a little confuse as to which of these two tachometers will work with my 50 HP Force Outboard. I know older Forces use 20 poles but how older are we talking about here?
Thanks

Re: Which tachometer for 1990 Force 50 hp (12 or 20 poles?)

Thanks for the suggestion. I am however looking for a typical round tachometer. I think Great Lakes Skippers still sell the 12 and 20 poles but I think if I just want the 12 poles, they are usually cheaper and easier to find than the 20 poles. So that is why I am asking if my 1990 motor uses a 12 or 20 poles.
Thanks

Re: Which tachometer for 1990 Force 50 hp (12 or 20 poles?)

Sorry, I am very new to boating and outboard motors. Found a good explanation of what a pole is from another forum:
A pole is the magnetic pickup portion of the alternator assembly. There are permanent magnets imbedded in the flywheel of the powerhead. The stator resides mounted stationary to the top of the powerhead as the flywheel rotates around it.
The magnets in the flywheel pass one of the wire-wound "poles" on the stator creating a magnetic field within the stator and thereby generating electricity.

The tachometer receives it's pulse each time the flywheel magnet passes a stator "pole". Because your outboard has 20 poles as counted by looking at the underside of the flywheel and counting the small rectangular laminated metal core pickups, the tachometer needs to be set to divide each revolution of the engine by a factor of 20.

Thanks for helping out.

50HP Force motors thru early 1987 had 8 pole stators. The bigger motors has 20 pole stators. Yours (1990 50 HP) has a 12 pole stator. This info comes from Teleflex.

Re: Which tachometer for 1990 Force 50 hp (12 or 20 poles?)

I am confused again. I looked under my flywheel and counted those rectangles and I got 20. So I am assuming it is 20 poles. But bhile, I agree with you, I checked with Teleflex and my particular motor was NOT listed as having a 20 pole stators. These are the motors Teleflex listed as having 20 pole: "90, 120 HP ( all to 1999 Rev. H), 150 HP (all to 1991 Revision B"). Mine was listed as having the 12 pole: "All other models" 12. Am I missing something here? My outboard motor number is 507X90D. Anyone else have a 507X90D with a tachometer? Which tachometer? Thanks

I called a Force expert and he said this: even though there are 20 coils, not all the coils are used for the charging system. So bhile is probably right. I have the Clymer shop manual but it doesn't say how many poles.

Anyone actually put a 12 pole in a motor similar to mine? Does it work?

flubberwisc,

what did you end up using for a tach? I have the exact same engine (and questions) you have, and am looking to buy a tach. Thanks!

I have this Faria tach, bought it on ebay at great lakes skipper and I never managed it to work . My motor is 125 force and has 20 poles . It simply doesn't pick up the signal from regulator . So I got my self tiny tach, not original, the copy that has also working hours on it . Bought it on ebay. I also got myself new rectifier ( not original ) and I will try to connect faria to this rectifier and see does it work in few days .

After way too much research, I think the 1990 50HP Force has 20 poles - so I bought the Teleflex Amega tach - one that wasn't in the Teleflex catalog, but reccommended by Teleflex. Apparently it is a special order, but I found one at BoatSportandTackle.com - model 69044P. I let you know how/if it works. Also got the matching speedo and volt meter gages..

flubberwisc, well finally got the Teleflex 69044P installed. The instructions say that when you apply power to it, the needle should go to zero - which it did. It also says that if it doesn't go to zero, then you have the wrong tach. Step 1 OK. Next, I fired up the motor for about a two count, and the tach read 600-700 RPM, which seems about right for idle. Step 2 OK. I've yet to give it a trial run.

Question for you - does your motor run rough on idle? Mine shakes a bit, jerks the steering wheel a bit. But, once in gear and above 1000 RPM or so, it runs great. Any carb trick or something you know of? I have new plugs in (runs the same as the old plugs..)

Hey baylinerboater1,

How didthat tach work out? I recently got the same engine and would also like to install a tach. Just inquiring if yours works so that I can do the same.

Your idle is way too low hence the engine shaking. You might want to check how to properly set it provided in the "sticky" forum list above.

Haven't been on the water with it (going Friday) but from what I can tell, it works. With power applied, the tach goes to 0 (good thing #1). I fired up the motor for just a second (OK, didn't have the water muffs on) and it read 700-800 RPM (I know, it should be about 1100 out of the water, will adjust idlle this WE).

Sticky forum? Sorry, this is about the only forum I've been in...
