Which way to go on Merc 888 Resto?

I'm looking for advice on repowering a mercruiser 888 in a 1974 25' Bayliner Saratoga. I know, I know, but the thing is just beautiful for it's age. I also picked it up cheap with a good trailer.

Previous owner had left the transom plug in and soaked the engine for some time. It runs, but it's coming out for replacement. Figure now's the time to upgrade.

I'm curious to know how much more torque a stock 888 sterndrive will handle, (not neccesarily more rpm), if any?

My desire is to stay as close to the original engine/stern configuration as possible to keep the stock look, but I may consider going w/ a newer motor and drive. Hoping to use existing raw water exh. manifolds, distributor, alt, starter etc. if possible.

Appreciate all points of view, suggestions, and even hearing if I'm just nuts as well.
Ted,
