Anyone have any input on which gas is the best for a 150 hp 4 stroke motor? I've heard Holiday's gas is the worst and didn't know if anyone knew why, or which stations carry "better" gas in Minnesota.

Thanks

Follow the tankers. If you are in the Twin Cities area the fuel for nearly every retailer very likely comes from the Koch Pine Bend Refinery. The most significant difference in the fuel is the name on the truck.

I always get poor mileage in my vehicles when I use Kwik Trip's gas. So that is why I don't use it in my boat either.

All the fuel in every city usually comes from the same place, but the additives are very different. Also, the cheaper places probably aren't as careful about keeping their fuel clean, dry, etc...

I'm no expert, but I have noticed that most of those tankers have several spigots, implying different fuels in a partitioned tank. And I know that many manufacturing facilities make products to a retailer's specification, so that a wide range of quality can come from one factory. Presumably refineries work the same way.

I've noticed that if I purchase cheap gas it will make my "service engine soon" light come on on my '96 Buick. If I go with the Phillips 66 super-duper clean stuff the light will go out and stay out. Runs real good too. Check for a Phillips 66 station in your area.

My chevy Tahoe will barely run on Sams Club gas, no wonder it's 20 cents cheaper then every body else's.

I think that holds true with all the cheap gas, they don't put enough cleaner in it to satisfy the the oxygen sensors and that sets off the check engine light. I usualy put a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner in my Fords because of that problem. Does not seem to bother the Chev truck.

Re: Which/Who's GAS

I used to have a Mercury Cougar 5.0L that did not like Mobil gas. I think at the time I had problems with their gas they advertised with the slogan "drive your engine clean" - maybe they still say this. Anyway the Cougar used to have problems with crud getting stuck in the EGR which would make the it idle terribly. Most of the time the crud would clear itself out. But at times, I'd have to remove the EGR and manually remove crud chunks from the valve/seat. I noticed that this condition was especially common if I used Mobil gas. I think the cleaning action of the Mobil fuel loosened off deposits causing them to be sucked into the EGR. So, in this case a "good" gas brand wasn't so good.

Re: Which/Who's GAS

I currently have 4 cars - ranging from an '86 chevy carb. engine all the way up to late model japanese and high tech FI, computerized american cars. I buy fuel based on (first) convenience and (second) price. Locally, I buy from generic sources such as Sam's Club, Fred Meyer, Safeway as well as Texaco and Chevron and everything in between. I NEVER brand shop, have not brand shopped ever. In that time, I've ownned dozens of cars of various brands and nation of origin. I also have run many different 2 and 4 stroke recreational engines and power tools, from single cylinder to V6 and V8.

I haven't noticed an iota of difference among fuels. Not to say others haven't, I don't doubt it at all (sincerely - I'm not being argumentative, just throwing in my $.02). It's just that I'm always surprised when I hear it because it's way beyond my own experience. Sometimes I wonder if it's just that I don't notice any performance issues - because all I really notice is that the cars start and run smoothly. I rarely (almost never) monitor mileage, for example. The only fuel related issue I can recall is in the 80s, in tiny little back woods towns, I'd occasionally, (rarely) have issues with moisture in the fuel. Haven't even seen that in at least 15 years.

I think the best gas is the BP (Amoco) Ultimate. Very expensive, But I don't think you would ever notice a difference. As said above the gas is the same from all the retailers. The additives are different.

PS All MN gas is 10% ethanol.

I buy all my gas from the Holiday near me. I've never had a problem using it in any of my vehicles, yard equipment, or outboard.
