1971 19' Trisonic tri-hull,Mercruiser 888, Ford 302. I have the engine out to replace a leaking Y pipe. While it's out is there anything else I should do or check. I found a small pocket of dryrot at the bottom of the transom that I'll repair. Also, I don't see the spiral wrap around the shift cable but I found a piece of it under the driver's seat. I guess the previous owner did not bother to replace it when he did his work.

rebars1, check it closely, paint has a habit of hiding pin hole rust.

Aldo

Re: While I'm at it......

The guy before me replaced the the original engine with a re-built block. The oil pan looks good for rust, but a lot of the paint on the rest of the engine is peeling with rust underneath. I can chip the loose paint off, but what's the best way to treat the rusted areas, after wire brushing, to repaint?

If you are talking about a castiron block then its only surface rust (hopefully!). Wire brush, chemical clean/treat (phosphoric acid) and then a recoat should do the job.

Aldo

Thanks Dunaruna. It is the cast iron block that needs repainting. I see you have a 302 also.

Bondo, you've been helping me along from the beginning and continue to do so. Thanks.

I'll keep you updated.

i like to have the oil pan hot-drip galvanized.

New discovery: The wires coming from the outside into the boat just above the drive shaft have been cut (trim position wires?) and are taped off. However, the trim guage seems to work OK. What else are those wires for?

Those are for the trim limit switch. The trim gauge sender is on the starboard side of the gimbal ring, the trim limit is on the Port side.

Re: While I'm at it......

It looks like the previous owner has disabled the trim limit mechanism. The three-button controller is set up to raise and lower the drive using the upper two buttons only (one for up, one for down). I'll take another look to see where the trim position wires pass through.
