Whining Noise at 3K RPM and Above

While motoring out of my marina, I ran across an inattentive fisherman's braided fishing line. After he got it free (obviously cut), we continued out to the broad lake. Once up on plane, there was a definite whining noise at 3K RPM and above. Engine sounds perfect at all RPMs while in neutral. 2003 Volvo DP-SM sterndrive; SX-MHP transom shield.

Back at the marina, I removed about 1.5 ft of easily accessible line, removed the first prop and pulled out 2 ft more, now waiting on the special Volvo tool to remove the second prop, but I can see through its center that there is still some line back there.

What are the chances this line was causing the whining noise? If not the line, what could it be? Thanks for your expertise.

It made no sound before and now it does, I would think its the line

Hope it hasn't damaged the seal

How will I know if the seal is damaged? I do plan on checking the sterndrive lube to be sure it's still full. Hopefully it's fine, but I'm pessimistic when it comes to boat repairs.

Only way to know for the most part is if it starts leaking. Look close and see if there is damage
