White Residue on Lower Unit

I have a mercruiser inboard that has quite a bit of white residue on the lower unit. I'm assuming that it's water stains or looks like oxidation on the black paint.

Anybody have any tips on removing this? I've tried waxes and such, but it seems to just mask the residue and not get rid of it.

Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Usually straight vinegar works and if that doesn't take it all off you could try some of the bathroom products such as Tilex or CLR, etc..

Thanks nefferso! I never thought of trying vinegar. I have tried products like Tilex. Those products work GREAT on water stains on the rest of the boat.

I'll try the vinegar though. Anybody else have any other tips?

I'm going to try the vinegar idea on my pontoons this winter. It sat in a lake with high mineral content and has a rough sandy substance on the toons.

Thanks Tail_Gunner! I was going to get the Lime-Away or CLR, but saw a past post about some peoples successes with a scowering pad and a mild abbrasive aid, so i tried that. I tried the vinegar suggestion, but didn't work at all for my issue.

I used the pad and a product called "Zuds". It was very effective. I'll remember Lime-Away and CLR though for the future. 8)
