white smoke from 165 Merc

I hope someone has an answer for me.<br /><br />I was running my 165 Mercruiser in the driveway with ears on. After about 10-15 min lots of white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. After I stopped the motor and took the ears off I noticed small black particuls near the intake, I'm sure this was the impellar breaking down. OK so I know I need to replace the impellar but why the white smoke? There was no water in the oil.

You should really be posting this in the I/O Forum, but I hope you didn't overheat the engine... White smoke on an I/O??? I'm not sure enough to answer.
