I hope someone has an answer for me.

I was running my 165 Mercruiser in the driveway with ears on. After about 10-15 min lots of white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. After I stopped the motor and took the ears off I noticed small black particuls near the intake, I'm sure this was the impellar breaking down. OK so I know I need to replace the impellar but why the white smoke? There was no water in the oil.

How hot did the motor get????If the impeller was chewed up, the flow of water could have been none.Charlie

replace the water pump before we do too much doom and gloom. not enough flow to the water cooled exhaust causes steam out the exhaust. that is the thing i look for to tell me its time to clean my heat exchanger. at low speeds steam in the exhaust shows before any overheat on the temp gauge in my boat.

I had the boat in my driveway and it was idling only. Could the steam be from the hot exhaust coming in contact with the water at the intake of the outdrive? If the pump was not moving the water this is the only way cold water could have come in contact with hot exhaust.

Thanks for the help!!!

This could surely be the case, did you look at the engine temp. The most important thing when running on muffs is to keep an eye on the temp. Many variables that can cause overheat.Kink in the hose, muffs slide back or forward, water pressure not turned high enough, fat friend standing on hose,Child goes by and grabs hose and yanks it off the drive(thats the one that that happened to me,good thing I had an audible alarm)Charlie

The temp guage never got real high more normal. I will assume it was just at the exhaust when it hit cold water.

Do you know anything about "Speedy Sleeves" for the cam?

By the way,I see you are in Seattle. It is cold and damp there.Ther colder and more humid it is ,the more the exhaust will be visable. On a warm, dry day you barely see any .Charlie

Could be smoke from burnt rubber, but probably steam. Replace the impellar with an ENTIRE kit, see what happens.

Hello, When was the last time your exhaust system was inspected? A leaky riser gasket or rotted manifold will cause large amounts of steam. Something you might want to look into while you are inspecting everything else.
