Im looking for advice on what manufacture builds a decent reliable 2 stroke. Im in the market for a 70-80HP motor, and could really use some input.

So I'll throw this out there for starters. Would I be wrong in saying Yamaha makes one of the better 2 strokes on the market?

Thank you for any response, TYEE

P.S. I've researched the Evinrude E-Tec, and will wait a while before going that route.

Yes. I'd say that Yamaha builds one of the better families of 2 strokes on the market.

So do Mercury, Bombardier and Tohatsu. I'm not sure if Suzuki has completely stopped building 2 strokes yet, but they built some of the better ones, too.

Yamaha hands down. Yamaha make a 70 and 90 hp. Three cylinders.

I have a 75 HP Mercury 2-Stroke (2002) and love it. Never had any problems yet. I think Yamaha also makes nice 2-strokes.

merc is great. yamaha is excellent. the older omc's just wont die, like the 1978 70hp tripple's, they just will not die.. they are cheap and parts are so available you can almost have them delivered with your pizza

Re: Who makes a great 2 stroke?

I had a 1990 Johnson 70 HP, nothing but trouble but I bought it used. I've had a C115 Yamaha since new in 1994, indestructible despite my dealer's attempts of sabatoge, so I can't imagine their 70 being any less reliable. I just got a 2003 Suzuki 70 HP 4-stroke (right here on iboats matter of fact, great price) and will NEVER buy another 2-stroke unless it comes on a boat I have to have, and then I'll replace it with a 4-stroke. A couple of my friends use the same Suzuki commercially and intend on staying with Suzuki, IF their's ever wears out. Unless you're out in he boonies with no dealer support, I can't emphasize enough to at least consider the Suzuki at iboats price ($4399). Is price, weight, or dealer support your determining factor(s)? And yes JB, Suzuki only makes 4-strokes now.

While you wait a while, I am putting the E-tec 90
through the NOSLEEP fishing rocket machine paces.
I could not be more pleased with its performance, In
the environment I am running it in,the water temperature
is just a few deg's above freezing, high in the
Rocky mountains.
This motor is hands down the best 2 stroke available
in the market place today. But second best is a
reasonable finish for some. ;)

When you run that E-TEC commercially in salt water for 4000 hours, let me know. :)

The merc 90 is a great motor. The Yamaha's are hard to beat though.

Evinrude builds a good motor but Johnsons are much better...... :) Just kidding! I would go with Merc or Yamaha. Honda I say are ok but if you have a problem my experience has been Honda will not stand behind their stuff!
