I am sorry i have searched for this info and can not find it I know there is good thread on this some where.

As far as I know there is what 3 companys that make 4 strokes 115 hp and up, and some of the companys just put there cowls and graphics on.

I beleive Merc has used Yammaha 4 stroke blocs although that is changing?

Johnson/Evinrude uses Susuki 4 stroke heads for their needs although they are getting rid of 4 strokes because they now have E-tect which they think/know is better.

And then there is Honda who I beleive is on there own.

How far off am I.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Who REALLY makes 4 strokes again.

PierBridge if I could add a little more to the info roscoe and myoutbords have given already...

Suzuki makes all the Johnson 4-strokes except for the 6 and 8hp models which are OMC's original design and were marketed under the Evinrude banner before Bombardier aquired OMC's assets.

And Merc importation of Yamaha 4-stroke powerheads was a temporary deal to buy time until the Verado went into production.
I'm sure Mercury has some type of legal contract which binds Yamaha to supply them with engines. Merc will use this leverage until they can begin to supply their own.

roscoe elaborated on tohatsu earlier in the thread.
Here's a couple of other tidbits:

Other than some of the larger four-strokes, Yamaha has been faded out by Mercury. Their small engines( 25hp and below for now) are now produced by Tohatsu. They might still make a couple of their own two-strokes, but not for long.
Contrary to what some beleive Mercury does not own any of Tohatsu. Mercury is a partner with Tohatsu on owning some land and a manufacturing plant that leases space to Tohatsu to produce engines. When Tohatsu had to ramp up to provide additional engines to Mercury they demanded that Mercury subsidize the manufacturing costs. Tohatsu was afraid that Mercury might decide to have someone else build their engines for them and did not want to get caught with excess manufacturing capability. ( They are very old and very wise. See China.)

Also, Japanese engine manufacturers have always stolen, borrowed and then improved upon U.S. technology. Now they provide the technology(at least what works) for everyone else. Back in the late 80's we received a prototype Nissan 140 hp that had OMC motor clamps. I mean the clamps had actual OMC part numbers stamped on them. That engine was shown at the Miami Boat Show, you should have seen the OMC people freaking out. We die grinded the numbers off on the show floor.

That's all for now I'll see if I can dig up some more info for your paper tomorrow it will be nice to get that last final out of the way and do some boating.

Good luck on it. :)

Re: Who REALLY makes 4 strokes again.

here is the latest the we found in school.
merc is having/buying tohatsu for under 40 HP or so from japan. yamaha is out of the loop with merc. last febuary merc opened a plant in china to manufacture 4 strokes in the 40-60 range. suzuki makes for strokes for suzuki now. BRP dropped the 4 stroke line. the verado, for now, will be made in fon dulac.. so we are back to about where it started.
depends on which HP as to who made it. the MBK plant in france makes F8 and below four strokes with the yamaha label. seems the main players are Tohatsu, suzuki, merc and yamaha and Honda. however quite a bit of parts are not manufactured by the actual companies.seems a lot of the castings are made by other vendors on certain engines.
so it seems the outboard industry is going the way of the auto industry. ya never really know who built it and where. it becomes who has the best warrenty service and where is the best service going to come from. buy american, the Honda accord is made with about 80%parts made in the US and assembled in the US, the chevy aveeo is made in Korea. some Toyotas are made/assembled in kentucky I think. the volvo SX,DP-sx and XDP are made in lexington KY and use GM engines, some of which are manufactured in Mexico. so rather than concentrating on who built it and where I would look at the service dept and the dealership that is selling it.

Re: Who REALLY makes 4 strokes again.

Just to correct some of the previous posts, Johnson outboards are only discontinuing the 4-strokes that are 40hp and higher.

Re: Who REALLY makes 4 strokes again.

G,day Just to confuse the issue further, I understand that mercury cast some aluminum parts for Harley Davidson.
I was told once that Briggs & Stratton cast flywheels for some V6 Mercury outboards, there is a casting mark on some flywheels that looks like a briggs logo.
Mercury have made parts for Honda, mainly gearboxes.
Cosworth have cast blocks for the larger V6 Mercs.
In fact to use an Aussie expression, Everybody is in bed with everybody else.

If France is making a motor it is off my list. The only thing they know how to make is wine and bread. Bad move for Yamaha.

The Yammi 6 and 8 hp two strokes are made in France and they are as dependable as gravity.

Cross off Nissan cars and trucks. Nissan is wholly owned by the French government.

Re: Who REALLY makes 4 strokes again.

There are exceptions to everything...but Renault/Nissan??? Owned and built in France or just owned and not built there? If built in France there goes Nissan quality and reliability.

Re: Who REALLY makes 4 strokes again.

Not sure about the built in France bit but I CAN confirm that renault/nissan are owned by the same company.

Nissan have a very large car plant in Newcastle upon Tyne, England and the majority of components used there are UK sourced but also owned by either Japanese or French.

And yes, they are all in bed with each other. What actually makes the difference is the specs that it's designed to-as all the components pretty much come from the same sources.
