Re: who works in IT biz?
I'm starting to agree with efhenry.

I was IT manager for a 1100 PC call center until recently, when management changes moved me back to a technical position I had no experience in.

With 14 hour work days, and endless high-priority issue, I neglected to file some change paperwork, which resulted in downtime and after 7 years of good service, was shown the door.

The fact that they can now hire two people for what they were paying me, may have have some bearing on the decision.

The IT industry is a complete reversal from 1998, where companies were begging you to name your price, to work for them.

Programming is going to India. China and Russia and what's left is going to younger workers, who will gladly work longer, unpaid hours for lower pay. Plus, with downsizing, most IT people with jobs are staying put.

I love technology, but my 15 years with Windows client/server technology, does not have my phone ringing much (other than bill collectors) and I realize there are many other IT pros in the same boat.

I may have to shift to another profession just to pay the bills, maybe moving back to truck driving, that seems to have some openings and is a little less stressful.

Just venting my frustrations.

Marty
