I'm a LAN/WAN engineer for Skytel. I've done the NT Admin thing. I've been doing it since the first IBM PC came out and to tell you the truth I'm about burned out on it all and I"m ready for a complete and total career change.

He enjoyed walking, working and watching the dogs. Whats your email I'll send you a few pics of soem of the deer we've taken down here.

Re: who works in IT biz?

I'm starting to agree with efhenry.

I was IT manager for a 1100 PC call center until recently, when management changes moved me back to a technical position I had no experience in.

With 14 hour work days, and endless high-priority issue, I neglected to file some change paperwork, which resulted in downtime and after 7 years of good service, was shown the door.

The fact that they can now hire two people for what they were paying me, may have have some bearing on the decision.

The IT industry is a complete reversal from 1998, where companies were begging you to name your price, to work for them.

Programming is going to India. China and Russia and what's left is going to younger workers, who will gladly work longer, unpaid hours for lower pay. Plus, with downsizing, most IT people with jobs are staying put.

I love technology, but my 15 years with Windows client/server technology, does not have my phone ringing much (other than bill collectors) and I realize there are many other IT pros in the same boat.

I may have to shift to another profession just to pay the bills, maybe moving back to truck driving, that seems to have some openings and is a little less stressful.

Just venting my frustrations.

Marty

Re: who works in IT biz?

Marty, I know your pain. My company laid me off and after two weeks of sending out resumes and not hearing anything at all I was called back to work in a completely different environment. Granted I was greatfulfor the opportunity I'm still WAY behind my peers and feel inadequate in my resposibilities. I'm 45 years old and I know they can hire someone younger with not nearly the work experience for way less money. I don't know if I'm in my midlife crisis or just wanting a change. While I was laid off I studied for and passed the test for my class A comercial drivers license. Not sure if thats what I want to do but atleast its different and I'll have it if i need it.

Re: who works in IT biz?

I am in IT management for a consulting company. Been there 12.5 years. Started as a repair technician. I have stayed put and worked hard, but I know the boot could drop at any time. There is a new person coming into the company and no one knows what it will be like. I really enjoyed the technical portion of my job, unfortunately, I no longer get to do that portion.
I run the service department, the staff augmentation, and IS. I can say the business changes a lot like you guys know. I have seen too many companies around us grow and fold to ever feel comfortable.

Re: who works in IT biz?

I am also a veteran of the IT biz with 15 years under my belt.. I started as an intern doing PC support and am now an application/integration architect for a very large financial services company.

I am not good at predicting where this industry is going, but I have been lucky enough to ride the crest of the wave all the way along.

I have found that my key to success is to be the best at what I am good at and to only be competent at the things I am not. I have also only blindly applied for one job in the past 15 years. Every other job was obtained by people I knew. Or people who knew people. Its a small world and reputation goes a long way..
