Whoops... Wrong grease

Last weekend I greased my Alpha 1 where ever I saw a zerk fitting. I used all purpose grease, as that was what I had on hand, and I thought a mechanic told me 'any grease will do'. Took the boat out, and there was a very unpleasant, loud grinding when I would turn the wheel (as I got closer to lock points it got louder). I (now) have some Quicksilver 2-4-C, which is what the manual says I should have used. Do I worry about the other grease in there? Or do I just regrease with the 24C until I can see it coming out?

Have to assume you are talking about greasing the gimbal bearing.
There is a service bulletin out, I forget which one and to lazy to look for it, but they changed using 24C because they put teflon in it which causes the bearings to slide.
The new grease from Merc is called ujoint and gimbal bearing grease.

I think there already was a problem before you put in the "any grease" !
You better remove the drive and check the gimbalbearing and the U joints, bet you find some water in the bellows too.

Ayuh,... I Agree...

The Grease job didn't cause any Problem, it was already there....

My Guess is, it's the U-joints...

Agreed - your problem was already there - just waiting to show up.

FWIW - it is never good to mix greases of different compositions - many are incompatible and will turn hard when mixed...
