Because boats approaching on your starbord side (right side have right-of-way over you. Its easier to see them if you are on that side of the boat. :)

Re: Why boat steering wheels opposite cars?

I would like to know the real reason as well. The countering prop torque bit doesn't fly, if you are carrying more people than yourself, then it is irrelevant. If you have gear stowed in different places, it can also add up to more weight in the wrong places, again making driver placement irrelevant. I had an early 60s 17 footer with the driving position on the left, and I would sit in both seats to see if it made a difference. Not a bit. I had an 85 horse motor on a boat that weighed 700 pound soaking wet. It planed level no matter where I put my weight, and I weigh 200 pounds. What about center consoles and their torque? Nope, I think there is a real reason out there, some old time mariner stuff or rules of the seaway of some stuff like that. :D <br /><br />Smartazz, your ignorance is hanging out, best tuck that away.....People don't come to an informative message board to look for ignorant people, there are enough of those to go around, they come here for an answer to a question. Either respond in an intelligent manner, or do not respond at all.

I don't know what you all are talking about. Mines on the same side as a car (American made in FL) but I due agree that most are on the opposite side. It must be a cost cutting thing. Or maybe a way to distinguish between unique boats (small builders) and mass produced boats.

This has been here before, do a search for much more info. One other reason I recall is that since hand throttle is easier to do right handed for majority of folks and it works out better to be on right. Also heard, since many custom jet boats have foot throttles they are on left. No idea if this has any truth to it or not.

Yep, cause you need to yield to the "stand on" boat on your right, so you have a better view of who to yield to. But...I like to think it's because of the Vikings. The steering mechanism on a Viking longship was a board nounted near the stern on the right side...the "steerboard (starboard) side". "May Odin give you fair winds and Thor spare you the sparks from his anvil!"

yep,,your rite.. it's because of prop rotation.. it does 'fly' because the steerin' wheel has to be placed somewhere.. can't help if'n there's more people or more load one day more then the next.. <br /><br />but all things bein' equal, normal, an just you in the boat.. it works..

i think hotbyte's reason is the best. we're all use to driving manual cars, left hand on the steering wheel and right hand on the shifter. now on the boat, you put your right hand on the throttle- if the wheel was located on the port side, it would be an awkward console with no where good to put the throttle. makes the most sense to me.<br /><br />i prefer mine right in the middle.

Remember that tiller controls are on the right too...So it's not just the boat manufacturers but the engine manufacturers that realize the "right is right" concept.

how bout this, your in a small river or bayou with another boat comming from the other direction, you go to the right he goes to the right, i thing you have a better view of the bank from the right side.

Re: Why boat steering wheels opposite cars?

I agree with all but it seems some of ya'll disagree with mellowyellow and the prop rotation thing. My jon boat used to have the seats two seats mounted in the very middle of the boat when I had only a 6hp motor. Afer upgrading to a 15hp the prop rotated the boat so much to the left that I had to mount the back seat over to the stabroard side to even out the boat when on plane. Of couse you won't notice it on a large V hull for it cuts through the water where as my flat bottom boat rides on top.

I totally agree with the guy who said counteract torque as the original reason. Boat's when racing or any other time should consider loading including moving passangers as required. With one passenger(driver) you must have the weight distributed on the starboard side. With other weight on board the Captain can move as required. Most people move weight forward and aft as required.

Re: Why boat steering wheels opposite cars?

The best answer is because we like it that way. Truthfully, it is marketing decisions that dictate that it ends up on the right side. Some sport boats put their stuff on the port side because it looks different, and somehow justifies the extra $$. When you look at boat designs, notice the placements. The old mahogany boat? Well, sometimes they were in the middle, sometimes they were pitched a bit to one side or the other. Center consoles, well...that is self-explanatory. Jet boats come each way. Most people like the throttle in the right hand, hence, there is your answer.<br /> As far as counter-rotation equalizing...I've busted that one before. I accidentaly bought a reverse handed prop for my emergency prop...hahaha was I surprised when I threw a hub and needed to go swimming. Hit the gas and thanked goodness that I didn't nail it. Damn! I was going backwards. I drove home with the throttle in reverse, (just fine actualy,) then back at the dock, on the Volvo 270, I pulled the pin and switched sides on the gear selection system. The rest of the summer, I drove normally, though my outdrive was backwards from the last season...hmmm..makes you wonder which was the "right" way to begin with. Boy! Did I let my marina guy have it....He sold me both, the first and emergency props. He should have noticed too.<br />Oh Well...At least I was boatin' when I was laughin'<br />-Gary

I think it is to give you a better shot at that Jet Ski coming form starboard who knows he has right of way.
