Why Do You Have to Run Engine with Water

To expand on the question, I know from reading posts and my manual that you should never run an engine without it being in the water or without it hooked up to muffs with running water. If you do so, the engine will overheat and the water impeller (not sure if this is the right term) will break. Starting with the engine only (assuming the water impeller was not an issue), couldn't you theoretically run the engine until the temp. gauge began to read excessive temps and then shut it down? Alternatively, assuming the engine overheating was not an issue, couldn't you run the engine with the hoses to the manifold disconnected so that water was going through the impeller and not break anything?

I'm trying to figure this all out because I had a small amount of water in 3 of my plugs. If I attach muffs to the engine and run it with the hose to the exhaust manifold unhooked and draining in the bilge, I want to ensure that I will not break anything.

Thanks

You will not get an accurate temp reading to the gauge, because there will be no water flowing by the temp sensor. So your motor can get very hot and never show an accurate temp.

With no water running through the exhaust, the hot exhaust gasses will burn the exhaust hoses after a short time.
If you have water on the plugs, could be from bad riseres or manifolds or the gasket between.
Is this a raw or fresh water cooled boat (With heat exchanger) and is it Mercruiser or Volvo?

Vipzach is dead on......You need to take a look at the internal condition of the riser/manifold, especially where the two meet......Pressure test them or just replace if they are over 7 years old, especially if you have a raw water cooled system....The other side won't be far behind....JK

Thanks - all the advice makes a lot of sense. Is it still safe to run the engine with one hose detached from the manifold and draining into the bilge?
