why does my 1979 140 mercury grind gears when i give it throttle to take off?

is this normal or do i need to shim something in the gears?any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might need to adjust the linkage. Get a GOOD service manaul, preferably the manufacturers manual.

Adjust the shift cable - BEFORE you kill the gears in the lower.<br /><br />-W
