My 70hp Merc. starts fine. Motor idles fine, but when I engage into foward or reverse it dies. Only way to prevent dieing is a hard shift or constant restart. When it is in gear it runs great. Only the transition from idle into foward & reverse. Any insight would be SO helpfull.

Have you adjusted the idle speed? I've had a couple of manuals for different engines and they all told me to adjust the idle while in forward gear (in water obviously!).

If the idle speed is too low it might cause this problem.

Could also be a lean condition at low speed. Try adjusting the low speed mixture screws out 1/8 of a turn at a time and see if that helps. You may also have a clogged low speed circuit which would require a carb rebuild to repair.
