There's a stainless outboard bracket that raises and lowers, Fulton is the manufacturor. Anyway, specs say not for 4 stroke. Why is this? I'm looking at a Honda 2hp for sailboat aux. Can't imagine that bracket wouldnt work. Thanks to anyone who knows the answer to this minor mystery. Linda

It is strictly a weight issue. If the motor weighs less than the bracket capacity there is no problem.

I would GUESS it's a weight issue.I wouldn't imagine you'd have problems with a 2HP engine though.It'only 27-28# I think. ;)
Ooops someone else was posting at the same time.

I agree with BW. In the past, most low end horsepower outboards of comparable h.p. weighed nearly the same. That no longer holds true with today's four stroke outboards. These engines weigh signficantly more than their 2 stroke counterparts. Enough so that this bracket mfg. obviously has concerns about exceeding it's weight bearing capacity.

Walt

Well, that's what I thought. FWIW, the honda 2hp weights 28.1 lbs for the long shaft/27lbs for the short, while the Mercury 2.5hp 2 stroke weighs in at 27.5 lbs. I figured the bracket manufacturer already knew this. . . fun BB!

What HP is the bracket rated for? There is usually more of a weight difference at higher HP.A 15HP Merc 2S = 73.8# but the 4S = 111#.They're probably trying to cover themselves in the event someone puts too much weight on their bracket and has a problem.

its not just the wt, it is the thrust and torque also. At low throttle setting my 9.9 high thrust yamaha kicker puts out a tremendous amount of thrust that visibly flexes the bracket (its a fulton 4stroke bracket). This motor was made to push a 40' sailboat, I really dont think a less stout bracket would hold up. But for a very small motor, i dont think youd have a problem, as the brackets are designed for larger engines.
