Sorry. It's Merc 5.0L, 1999, Thunderbolt V.

The viscosity of the oil looks like has been totally wiped out and really smells like fuel.

With all the running problems you have had this spring i would start with fresh oil and see what happens before calling it a problem

All the long idle times with a badly running motor NO starts with long cranks ect would dump a lot of fuel that would normaly not get there at all and some fuel would be cooked out of the oil with long run times at normal temps

tommays

Tommays- you know my previous issues but this is not about it. Actually, despite the fact that I emptied the tank and put fresh fuel, new fuel filter, verified that the pick up house filter is not clogged, and new water/fuel separator, eletric pump is running, the engine ran only for 5-7 seconds last night. Happened 6 times and I gave up, disappointed. Before these changes, it ran for 30 minutes. That's another chapter. I mught end just just barbecuing this Father's Day.

Now going back to this thread, I changed the oil last night and this old oil is from previous season. You are saying that long idling, long and many cranks would cause extra fuel to be burned with the engine oil? Could too rich mixture also cause this?

milkyway.. is this all the first time you tried to run the boat after the winter? you saying you didnt change the oil before winter or as part of your summerizing?

have you pulled the plugs and turned the engine over to see if anything... gas.. water.. etc.. shoots outta the cylinders? have you done a comp test?

is the oil so full of gas that is over full? do you have the fuel pump with the site glass? or the clear hose running in to the carb.. is their gas in either? if so need to replace pump..

I am saying that long idling and long cranks would put a LOT OF UNBURNED FUEL in the oil

When a motor is running GOOD there will be some amount of fuel dilution in the oil

When its running BAD there will be more fuel dilution in the oil

tommays

Tommays - Got it. I want to bring the boat to my exxon mechanic tomorrow for timing so I can go out Sunday but I want it to start and at least warm up for timing, if they can establish the missing TDC.
