Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

If you start your engine with the leg raised the unijoints are out of line and you can throw a unijoint clip. Then the unijoint comes apart and all sorts of nasty things happen, like no drive to the leg and no H2O comes out.....

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

I'd start by removing the leg (drive unit) and assessing the damage. You may get lucky and only need to replace the unijoint(s).... Keep us posted.

Chris.........

Second mistake in addition to running engine with drive up.Why not go to your local dealer and order the factory manual? They tell it so much better.Aftermarket manuals are great...if you can not get the real thing.Think aboutit.
DHP

Good idea, I would even purchase both. No local dealer (very small town), will they have one for a 2.5 liter. I see quite a bit of info for 3.0 and larger, but the 2.5 seems to be a forgotten one. Does the newer 3.0 "bolt-up" as an easy upgrade to the 2.5?

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

You can replace the 2.5 engine with a 3.0 engine. No Problemo. Some of the internal parts are different because bore size is not the same.Someone should kick in with a site to get genuine Merc Manuals......
DHP

Thank you for your help, as you can read I am new to boat ownership and this site is *thankfully* supported by those willing to share their experience. Again, thank you.

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

Bondo says "lower drive before starting" because he is saying that it puts stress on the u-joints, think about it, turning left and right puts stress on the joints also... So all in all what is being said is, why stress the joints any more than nessessary... if you are in shallow water and need to run the drive partially raised, please do so. only don't go above an idle.. any mis alignment to the u-joints will wear on them..

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

Well, it was full up (with ear muffs on) and I was trying to figure out a low idle/stalling problem, put it in gear and revved it numerous times. Bummer. Is there such thing as an Idiot's Guide to Boating?

lol. Thank you all, still wanting more info about swapping a 3.0 liter into my boat?

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

You'll need 2 manuals for that package. One covers the engine and the other covers the stern drive unit.

Part numbers are :
Engine : 90-14693-1 (covers all 4 cyl 1985-1989)
Drive : 90-12934-1 (covers R, MR, Alpha 1 1983-1989)

The 3.0L fit very nicely into the same hole. But at this point in time your main concern will be the leg and the uni area.

Chris...............

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

Just went searching and found this site (searching other posts on this site)
web page

You'll find all the manuals and lots of parts. You can even look up the part numbers yourself. With the manuals drop the last dash and digit. Something like "90-12934" will work but it doesn't like "90-12934-1" I think they do mailorder too.

Chris..................

Re: Why lower drive before starting engine???

Okay, here goes...
Took off the leg, well drained oil first. Approx 1 quart (guy I bought it from said "Just Serviced") of thick oil. Pulled leg off. U-joints look strong, no play. Shaft that goes forward into the engine has splines cut into the end. The splines are shiny and fresh looking with metal shavings and highly worn peaks with what appears to be "spinning" damage. Could it spin in the coupler? Looked into coupler, don't know what I'm looking for. Do these splines go into coupler or through coupler and into the flywheel? Is it possible that low oil caused high friction which caused spline wear that caused the prop to stop spinning?

Also, lifted engine hatch and examined what I could see of the coupler. It is sandwiched in some sort of engine mount. The mount has a top piece that bolts down, like an oxen yoke. Two large bolts hold the yoke down. The bolt heads are a full 1.5 inches up... should there be a rubber grommet there or are they loose?

Need to check lower unit for damage due to low oil, what should I be looking for?

What, other than negligence, would cause the lower unit to hemmorage oil (if indeed it was full recently)?

How hard is it to replace coupler? Looks like I can remove rear engine mount and just "pop" it off and replace.

What else do I need to look at, rebuild, or replace given the previous comedy of errors I have made?

Thanks for reading this and if you have any energy left, please feel free to reply. :D
