why so high

i have a 85 rude 90 hp when i start it up it idles at 1400 rmp on a hose . then when i shift into gear it seems to be good.but then when i put it back into nautral the motor revs up really high to 4000 which is when i shut it off.why is it doing this? i did just take the shifter off the side .

on muffs, you should be idling at around 800-850. because there is no back pressure on the exhaust, as there is in the water. in the water should be 650 -700 in gear at idle. there is no search for the linc n sinc for the omc motors, as it is a little different for each engine and year. you are not suppose to rev the engine above 1500 on muffs anyway. it sounds like you have a return linkage problem, either on the motor, in the control cables. exactly what did you do.

in the side of the carbs, where the throttle plate rod comes thru, there is suppose to be a return spring, that could have come loose. allowing the throttle plate to dance.
