Why was it Confiscated???

Yesterday we sold a Bayliner to a gentleman from Quebec. We're in Wisconsin. When he tried to cross the border at Detroit they confiscated it. He had the Bill of Sale, and clear titles for both the boat and trailer. The boat was registered in Illinois, but there was no Illinois plate on the trailer when it was traded in. Did we miss something? The boat was used mostly here in Wisconsin as far as I know. Is the lack of an Illinois plate on the trailer the issue?

I would sincerly doubt they would confiscate it due to a missing plate. I worked with the explorer's program with customs on the U.S. side years ago and I can only imagine they would have just turned him around at the border until he had a legal plate. Was he trying to carry something or someone in the boat while crossing? That would warrent confiscation.

The boat was empty except for fenders and a paddle, no cover.

Just in, I guess they released it. The price agreed to over the phone didn't include tax, so we paid half and he paid half (Why is it some people don't expect to have to pay sales tax?). It caused some confusion and they just had to hold it until they confirmed that the tax was paid.

Not sure why people don't think they should have to pay the taxes?! Ever tried to negotiate that at any retail store??? Not happening!

I live in Puget Sound, and I avoid ALL dealings with ANYTHING that even REMOTELY has to deal with the border Nazis. Insane. Trying to mail a simple box with 1957 Scott Atwater parts was a major hassle. Latest and last, was a 1967 Honda Z50 frame and motor and wheels. All apart, all old junk restorable, and the guy even drove down 4 hours just to pick it up, so he could get me to sign away my life in serial numbers, bill of sale, cost, phone numbers , addresses. Never again will I deal with anything border related. World going to hell in a handbasket....

Why was it Confiscated???
Because they felt like it.

No, really, having no plate probably aroused their suspicions. They needed time to make sure everything was legit.
